"*"Empowering Africa through philanthropy and sustainable enterprise."*"
The Pharos Foundation (the “Foundation”) is a privately funded entrepreneurial organization dedicated to advancing philanthropic initiatives alongside for-profit social enterprises. With a vision of fostering an economically vibrant and inclusive Africa, the Foundation’s mission is to achieve this goal by strategically investing in the continent’s human and physical capital, with a strong focus on job creation.
Established in 2011, the Foundation has implemented numerous programs across Ethiopia and Somaliland and is actively expanding its reach into Rwanda and Kenya. Its core strategic pillars include education, health, water, and agriculture. Notable projects include a girls’ boarding school in Western Ethiopia, providing secondary education to 240 students with full funding from the Foundation, and a large-scale water initiative in Somaliland, poised to deliver water to 6,000 households and their livestock.
In 2020, the Foundation launched Pharos Ventures, its wholly owned social enterprise subsidiary in East Africa. Pharos Ventures has already launched several ambitious ventures in Somaliland and Ethiopia within the construction and word-processing sectors and is preparing to introduce its first business in Kenya.
Headquartered in London, the Foundation operates from a regional headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, with additional country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assist), Somaliland (Hargeisa), and Rwanda (Kigali).
