CHAI Kenya is seeking a skilled technical professional to assist the WEAPON project team in executing medical liquid oxygen systems, with a primary focus on overseeing the construction of concrete plinths and ensuring the proper installation and commissioning of cryogenic bulk liquid oxygen storage tanks across multiple healthcare facilities in Kenya. These facilities are at differing stages of project implementation, requiring adaptable and precise technical oversight.

Review and interpret site layouts and engineering drawings pertaining to cryogenic liquid oxygen (LOX) installations to ensure accurate comprehension and alignment with project requirements.

Conduct thorough evaluations of risk assessments pertaining to installation procedures and verify adherence to all relevant compliance standards.
Ensure strict compliance with CGA Code of Practice CP 36 standards governing the storage of cryogenic liquids at user premises.
Concrete plinth construction supervision entails overseeing the meticulous installation and structural integrity of reinforced concrete plinths, ensuring strict adherence to engineering specifications, safety protocols, and industry standards. This role demands a comprehensive understanding of concrete mixing, formwork assembly, reinforcement detailing, and curing processes, alongside proficiency in interpreting blueprints and construction drawings. The incumbent is responsible for verifying material quality, coordinating labor and equipment allocation, and conducting rigorous quality control inspections throughout each phase of the construction process. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential to address unforeseen challenges, mitigate risks, and maintain project timelines while upholding compliance with regulatory requirements and client expectations.

Collaborate with biomedical and engineering personnel at the facility throughout the installation process.
The process involves completing the commissioning phase and ensuring a smooth handover of systems, equipment, or projects. This includes verifying functionality, conducting final inspections, and confirming that all deliverables meet specified standards and requirements. Additionally, the role entails preparing comprehensive handover documentation, coordinating with stakeholders, and addressing any outstanding issues to facilitate a seamless transition to the operational phase.
Facilitate the commissioning process by conducting initial filling, performing leak and pressure tests, and executing functional checks on the LOX system.
Ensure system performance aligns with established parameters, including flow rates, delivery pressures, and purity levels.
Provide on-site training to facility personnel regarding the safe operation, monitoring protocols, and emergency procedures for cryogenic liquid oxygen (LOX) systems.

A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience is required for this role, along with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard software and tools is essential, and candidates must demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are also necessary to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Prior experience in project management or leadership is highly desirable, as is familiarity with compliance and regulatory standards. Additionally, the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines is crucial.
Applicants must hold a relevant undergraduate degree, with a minimum of a 2:1 classification or equivalent experience in a related field. A bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil or Mechanical Engineering is required for this position, though applicants with a degree in Structural or Construction Engineering may also qualify.

Professional registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya (ELK) or eligibility for such registration is a prerequisite for this role.

Proven expertise in the installation of cryogenic liquid oxygen (LOX) storage tanks, encompassing site preparation, secure tank placement, anchoring procedures, and integration with vaporizer and pipeline systems.
Skilled in constructing and installing medical gas pipeline systems (MGPS) within healthcare environments, encompassing copper piping, zone valve boxes, area alarm panels, and terminal unit outlets.
Experienced in performing pressure testing, detecting leaks, and executing commissioning procedures for cryogenic liquid oxygen (LOX) systems as well as medical gas pipeline networks.
Proficiency in structural load calculations and adherence to foundation design specifications for large cryogenic vessels is required.
