Job Purpose: To oversee and execute the strategic initiatives, operational tasks, and team management functions necessary to achieve organizational objectives. This role is responsible for ensuring the efficient execution of duties aligned with company goals while fostering a collaborative work environment and maintaining high standards of performance and accountability.

The Head of Institutional Banking will spearhead strategic direction and comprehensive oversight of the Bank’s Institutional Banking portfolio in Kenya, encompassing Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDS), State-Owned Enterprises (Parastatals), Development Finance Institutions (Dais), Multilateral Agencies, and other prominent public and institutional entities.

This position is tasked with fostering balance sheet expansion, cultivating critical partnerships, upholding regulatory standards, and achieving sustainable profitability that aligns with the Bank’s long-term strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Deliver strategic leadership for the Institutional Banking division, aligning its direction with the Bank’s overarching strategy while considering the dynamics of Kenya’s macroeconomic landscape and regulatory framework.

Responsible for managing the growth, stability, and strategic composition of assets and liabilities within the institutional portfolio, prioritizing high-quality investments, risk-adjusted performance, and sustainable practices.

Expand and enhance institutional client relationships to foster growth in existing accounts, streamline collections and payment processes, and promote the adoption of escrow services and wholesale deposit mobilization solutions.

Proactively forge and nurture strategic partnerships with Government Ministries, County governments, Parastatals, Development Agencies, and other key institutional stakeholders.

We track national and county government development plans, public sector initiatives, public-private partnership ventures, and donor-supported programs to pinpoint financing and transaction prospects.

Originate, structure, and deliver complex institutional banking solutions, including cash management, trade finance, structured lending, and advisory services.

Engage proactively with the National Treasury, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), and key regulatory authorities to ensure alignment with evolving policies and funding frameworks.

Foster enduring, high-level connections with pivotal stakeholders spanning Government entities, Development Partners, and Institutional clients.

Deliver outstanding client satisfaction by proactively engaging with clients, providing solutions promptly, and consistently elevating service standards.

Serve as the primary escalation resource for key institutional clients.

Ensure adherence to CBK regulations, internal credit policies, AML/CFT requirements, and public sector governance frameworks.

Provide oversight on credit risk, portfolio quality, and exposure limits for institutional clients.

Engage actively in pertinent management and credit committees, contributing well-informed perspectives on institutional banking risks as well as potential opportunities.

Applicants must possess a relevant academic qualification, such as a bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degrees or specialized certifications may be advantageous, depending on the specific role requirements. Proficiency in relevant technical or theoretical knowledge, as evidenced by academic transcripts or professional development courses, is often expected.

A bachelor’s degree in business, economics, finance, or a closely related discipline is required.

A Master’s degree, such as an MBA, Finance, or Strategy, would be advantageous.

Professional Qualifications / Membership to Professional Bodies / Publication:

Candidates should possess relevant professional credentials and affiliations with recognized industry bodies, demonstrating expertise and commitment to their field. Additionally, a history of publications in reputable journals or other scholarly or professional outlets is highly desirable, showcasing thought leadership and ongoing engagement with advancements in the discipline.

Professional banking or finance qualification, such as AKIN, ACID, or an equivalent credential, is required.

Formal training in corporate/ institutional lending, relationship management, or credit risk management.

Work Experience Required:

A proven track record of 8–10 years in banking is required, including at least 4–5 years in senior or leadership positions within Institutional, Corporate, or Public Sector Banking.

Requires a track record of successfully overseeing engagements with governmental bodies, parastatal organizations, or development finance institutions within the Kenyan business environment.

Strong understanding of Kenya’s banking sector, public sector financing frameworks, and regulatory environment.

Proven expertise in critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential for this role. Candidates must demonstrate strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate efficiently within cross-functional teams. Proficiency in relevant industry tools and technologies is required, along with a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and professionalism. The ideal applicant will exhibit adaptability in dynamic environments, a proactive approach to challenges, and a dedication to continuous learning and improvement.
