POSITION OVERVIEW:
This role involves overseeing the ongoing medical care of outpatients while also providing guidance and mentorship to junior medical staff. The Medical Officer evaluates and manages outpatient cases, maintaining communication with lead surgeons to address any substantial changes in a patient’s condition and determine appropriate treatment and care strategies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Overseeing daily operational tasks to ensure seamless workflow efficiency, collaborating with cross-functional teams to align on project goals and deliverables, and maintaining meticulous records of progress, expenditures, and compliance metrics. This role involves spearheading strategic initiatives, assessing performance against established benchmarks, and implementing corrective actions as needed. Additionally, it requires fostering a culture of accountability, mentoring junior staff, and serving as a liaison between leadership and field operations to facilitate clear communication and decision-making. Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in accordance with the Medical Officer’s defined scope of clinical practice, as dictated by patient care needs.
Evaluate pertinent pathology, radiology, and other diagnostic findings, then relay key results to the treating surgeon in a clear and timely manner.
Diligently document all patient encounters, including detailed medical histories, comprehensive examinations, treatment strategies, diagnostic investigations, and subsequent actions, in the patient’s medical record.
Assist in facilitating the coordination of patient care to enhance throughput efficiency within the facility.
Confer with pertinent residents and/or primary surgeons to evaluate the status of all outpatients and inpatients.
Initiate and oversee the diagnostic process and treatment plan for patients, which encompasses requesting essential radiology and pathology investigations, administering suitable medications, and facilitating specialist consultations as needed.
Deliver real-time educational support and mentorship to junior medical staff, ensuring immediate learning opportunities are integrated into their clinical practice.
Maintain open and professional dialogue with patients and/or their immediate family members to discuss the patient’s condition.
The Medical Officer must maintain a valid and current license at all times throughout their employment.
Oversees a range of essential clinical support services, such as pharmacy operations, laboratory functions, radiology, biomedical engineering, and nutritional services.
Oversees the performance of all clinical officers operating within the facility, ensuring adherence to established protocols and standards of care.
Engage in departmental quality management initiatives in alignment with established Hospital Quality benchmarks.
Oversee additional responsibilities as assigned, which may include supporting cross-functional teams, participating in special projects, or contributing to process improvements to enhance operational efficiency. Education and experience requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting, coupled with a minimum of five years of professional experience in project management or a closely related discipline. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in utilizing project management software and possess strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills. Additionally, experience with budgeting, risk assessment, and stakeholder communication is highly desirable.
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or an equivalent medical degree is required.
Registered with the Medical Council of Kenya as a licensed medical practitioner.
A leadership and management course or prior experience in such roles would be highly beneficial.
