The Maternity Nurse oversees the daily execution of Maternal and Neonatal Care protocols within IRC-supported health facilities’ maternity units. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary maternity teams—including physicians, nurses, clinical officers, auxiliary staff, and indirectly with theater personnel—the incumbent ensures optimal care standards for admitted patients and newborns while advancing the quality of Gynecological and Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care services across IRC-supported facilities.

High-quality maternal and perinatal care is essential, demonstrated by delivering exceptional nursing during admission, hospitalization, and discharge for both mothers and newborns. Regular and immediate assessments of general and clinical conditions enable early detection of complications, supported by sound clinical judgment to seek assistance promptly while stabilizing the patient. Additionally, proficiency in evaluating discharge readiness for mothers and their newborns, as well as preparing thorough documentation, is required.

Antenatal Care includes performing routine examinations, tracking the health indicators of both mother and fetus, requesting and analyzing diagnostic tests, and delivering guidance on nutritional needs and birth planning.

Labor and Delivery Management involves overseeing the progression of labor with the use of a pantograph or labor care guide, offering both physical and emotional support to patients, and administering prescribed medications such as antibiotics, tectonics, and analgesics. Additionally, the role includes performing normal vaginal deliveries, conducting AMSTEL procedures, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in complex deliveries, assisting with rare cases like breech presentations and assisted vaginal deliveries (AIDS), and executing neonatal resuscitation as needed.

Postnatal Care involves closely observing mothers for potential complications such as hemorrhage or infection, evaluating uterine involution and lochia, facilitating early ambulation, and providing education on breastfeeding, perineal care, and postpartum family planning.

Emergency Response: Proactively identifying obstetric and neonatal complications at an early stage, promptly implementing appropriate interventions, and escalating care to medical officers as needed.

Able to manage patient referral documentation, ensuring all necessary equipment and medications are prepared and ready for transit. Responsible for accompanying the patient during internal transfers within hospital departments or during external referrals to another healthcare facility.
