The Maternity Nurse oversees the daily execution of Maternal and Neonatal Care services within IRC-supported health facilities. Collaborating extensively with multidisciplinary maternity teams—including doctors, nurses, clinical officers, auxiliary nurses, and indirectly with theater staff—they ensure high-quality care for patients and newborns admitted to the unit. Additionally, the role focuses on enhancing care standards for Gynecological and/or Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care patients across IRC-supported health facilities.
Oversee the execution of core operational duties, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and adherence to established protocols. Develop and implement strategic initiatives to enhance productivity, efficiency, and overall performance within the designated team or department. Monitor workflows, evaluate outcomes, and provide constructive feedback to foster continuous improvement and professional growth among team members. Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to align efforts, resolve challenges, and drive cohesive solutions that support long-term business success. Maintain compliance with industry regulations, internal policies, and quality standards while upholding accountability for results.
Skilled in delivering exceptional maternal and perinatal nursing care throughout the entire patient journey—from admission and hospitalization to discharge for both mothers and newborns. Conduct on-the-spot or daily evaluations of general and clinical status, proactively identifying potential complications with sound clinical judgment. Promptly escalate concerns while stabilizing the mother and newborn, and assess their readiness for discharge. Additionally, prepare and finalize all necessary documentation for a seamless transition.
Antenatal Care encompasses the provision of systematic and routine health assessments for expectant mothers, vigilant monitoring of both maternal and fetal vital indicators, the procurement and evaluation of diagnostic investigations, and the dissemination of comprehensive health guidance focusing on optimal nutrition and thorough birth preparedness planning.
Monitoring labor progression with a pantograph or labor care guide, offering physical and emotional support to patients, and administering prescribed medications such as antibiotics, tectonics, and analgesics are key responsibilities. Additionally, the role involves conducting normal vaginal deliveries, performing AMSTEL procedures, collaborating within a multidisciplinary team to manage challenging deliveries, including breech presentations and assisted vaginal deliveries (AIDS—though rare), and executing neonatal resuscitation when necessary.
Postnatal Care responsibilities include observing mothers for potential complications such as hemorrhage or infection, evaluating uterine involution and lochia, aiding early ambulation, and instructing mothers on breastfeeding, perineal care, and postpartum family planning.
Emergency Response: Proactively identifying obstetric and neonatal complications at their earliest stages, implementing prompt and suitable interventions, and escalating patient care to medical officers as needed.
Able to efficiently process patient referral documentation, arrange necessary equipment, and prepare medications for transportation. Additionally, accompanying patients during internal hospital referrals or external transfers to other healthcare facilities.
Maintaining meticulous and comprehensive documentation is essential, requiring the preparation of accurate clinical records, patient charts, and reports within the EMR system. This includes generating Ministry of Health reports and ensuring adherence to healthcare regulations when utilizing and sharing data for informed decision-making.
Continuous Quality Improvement and Safety: Implementing the nursing care model and applying outcomes collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to enhance patient management. Ensuring strict adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols, actively engaging in Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) audits, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives. Promoting respectful maternity care while maintaining a secure clinical environment for staff, patients, and their families.

Able to assume leadership and management responsibilities, including covering calls and hospital shifts, conducting physician rounds, and overseeing ward operations. Demonstrates capability to act as a team leader, making informed decisions regarding patient care and staff supervision. Actively participates in required meetings, continuing medical education (CME) sessions, and training programs as needed.
Demonstrates accountability by ensuring all equipment and instruments are thoroughly cleaned and processed in accordance with national standards following each procedure. Oversees equipment inventory management and maintains safety protocols, including verifying the operational readiness of emergency crash carts for every shift.
Ensure that emergency preparedness trays and equipment inventories are fully stocked and maintained in the maternity unit, with daily updates conducted through a structured shift handover process.
You will also perform any additional tasks as assigned by your supervisor.
Reporting and communication responsibilities include transmitting information clearly and accurately to relevant stakeholders, both verbally and in writing. This role requires maintaining open lines of communication with team members, supervisors, and external parties to ensure alignment and transparency. Accurate and timely reporting is essential to support decision-making processes and track progress against established goals. Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills are necessary to convey complex information in a digestible manner and foster collaborative work environments.
Compiles comprehensive daily nursing care activity reports, ensuring detailed documentation during shift handovers.
Maintains precise records, orders necessary equipment and supplies, and ensures their proper accountability.
Attend ward meetings, monthly hospital-wide gatherings, and facilitate Continuous Medical Education sessions.
You are responsible for accurately documenting and recording all admissions, discharges, transfers, and deaths as they happen, while also contributing to relevant mortality audits.

Operations: Ensure all departmental equipment—including suction machines, resuscitators, and various procedure sets—remains in optimal working condition through regular maintenance and inspections. Additionally, submit timely and accurate inventory reports to document equipment status and availability.
Notify the head nurse promptly of any major operational modifications or developments.
Develop, implement, and maintain robust systems to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies, while proactively identifying opportunities for operational enhancement and efficiency improvements.
Ensure strict adherence to finance, logistics, IT, security, communications, and human resource/administration policies and procedures tailored specifically for the IRC-Kenya program.
Ensure adherence to all newly circulated procedures and guidelines issued by Senior Management Team (SMT) and/or Field Team Management.
Maintains strict confidentiality regarding all proprietary information, internal data, and sensitive communications. Ensures no unauthorized access or disclosure of confidential materials, safeguarding the organization’s interests at all times.
Employees must strictly safeguard all confidential information regarding the practices and operations of IRC that they encounter during the course of their duties, disclosing such details only when authorized or as part of standard operational responsibilities. Unauthorized dissemination of this information to any external party or organization is strictly prohibited.
The scope of the Midwife’s responsibilities extends beyond the outlined duties and tasks to ensure the effective execution of the IRC’s humanitarian objectives. Prioritizing the organization’s mission, the Midwife must address all emergent challenges with adaptability and a willingness to assume additional responsibilities as circumstances demand.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as engineering, computer science, or business administration, is required, along with a minimum of three years of professional experience in a related industry. Proficiency in project management software and strong analytical skills are essential, while familiarity with industry-specific tools and methodologies is highly advantageous. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, along with a proven track record of delivering successful projects, are necessary. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate adaptability, problem-solving capabilities, and a commitment to continuous professional development.
Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) or Kenya Registered Midwife (KRM) from an accredited Nursing Training Institution.
Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and holds a valid practicing license.
With a minimum of two years of hands-on clinical experience in a high-volume maternity ward setting, you bring a wealth of practical expertise to this role.
