Job Objective/Purpose

To ensure comprehensive operational knowledge, you must thoroughly study, interpret, and remain proficient in all systems, policies, and procedures detailed in the Hospital Manual, with particular emphasis on those governing the delivery of medical services—such as admission and discharge protocols, nursing documentation requirements, ward equipment and supply management, and emergency response guidelines.

Document all sentinel incidents and events in accordance with established protocols, submitting reports within a 24-hour timeframe through the designated reporting tools.

Ensure adherence to infection control protocols as outlined in the hospital’s official manual, rigorously implementing the specified infection control bundles—including SSI, VAP, CACTI, and CLA BSI—where applicable.

Supervise patient attendants in alignment with their established roles and responsibilities.

Participate actively in ward rounds and obtain handover reports from the outgoing nurse upon shift change.

Conduct discussions with the patient’s immediate family members to elucidate their understanding of the patient’s care objectives.

Maintain secure documentation and storage of patients’ valuables throughout their stay.

Accurate documentation of patient records and thorough review are essential, along with collaboration with fellow clinicians and consultants as necessary.

Ensure that every diagnostic request, whether for laboratory or radiology services, includes the patient’s relevant clinical information.

Adhere to the six International Patient Safety Goals (Ipsus)—patient identification, clear communication, proper handling of high-alert medications, accurate site marking for procedures and surgeries, minimizing healthcare-associated infections, and preventing falls—to uphold the highest standards of patient safety.

Provide patients and their families with comprehensive guidance on health-related matters to enhance their understanding and promote informed decision-making.

Documenting patient care priorities is essential within the nursing care plan to ensure individualized, and comprehensive treatment strategies are implemented efficiently.

Maintain the emergency trolley in optimal condition for efficient resuscitation efforts by ensuring drugs and supplies are fully stocked, removing damaged equipment immediately, and submitting prompt reports of any issues. Implement a comprehensive checklist system, updating it bi-monthly on the 1st and 16th of each month—or more frequently as necessary—to guarantee readiness and compliance.

Ensure physicians and consultants are promptly informed of any patient updates and critical values as soon as they are documented.

Execute all invasive nursing interventions utilizing strict aseptic technique to maintain patient safety and prevent infection.

Each day, input unit-specific data accurately and without delay.

All pertinent consultants must thoroughly explain procedures and secure consent from relevant parties.

Conduct thorough reviews of official checklists for every patient before any procedure, including those in theater, radiology, and renal units.

Maintain strict adherence to patient privacy and confidentiality protocols in accordance with established policies at all times.

Administer medications as prescribed by healthcare providers, ensuring precise dosage and timing in accordance with established protocols and patient-specific needs.

Ensure strict adherence to the ten essential principles of medication administration, including verifying the correct patient, medication, dosage, route, and timing, as well as maintaining accurate documentation, providing client education, conducting thorough assessments, evaluating outcomes, and respecting the client’s right to refuse treatment.

Promptly submit all new medication orders to the pharmacy, ensuring STAT doses are administered within 30 minutes of receipt.

Ensure the secure storage of D.D.A. drugs and maintain accurate drug registers in accordance with unit-specific protocols.

All unused medications must be reimbursed without delay to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to uphold patient trust. Immediate processing of refunds for any medications not administered or utilized is mandatory to maintain accurate inventory records and financial accountability.

All verbal prescriptions must be countersigned by the attending physician within 24 hours, in accordance with hospital protocols.

Demonstrating commitment to the Nursing Council of Kenya’s established professional standards, this role ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care and treatment.

Person Specification

Earned a Diploma or Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from an accredited institution, demonstrating a comprehensive foundation in clinical practice, theoretical knowledge, and professional ethics to deliver high-quality patient care.

A Higher Diploma in Neonatal or Pediatric Critical Care Nursing (NICU/PICK) is an essential qualification for this role.

Holding a current and valid license from the Nursing Council of Kenya is essential.

Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), as well as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLAS), with current credentials.

With at least two years of hands-on experience as a NICU or PICK Nurse, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in delivering specialized care to critically ill newborns and pediatric patients in high-acuity settings.

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, coupled with a keen attention to detail, are essential. Additionally, a strong results-driven mindset and unwavering reliability are required.
