The Global Technical Lead (GTL) will spearhead the delivery of exceptional technical support for a cross-border initiative aimed at bolstering digital proficiency and employment prospects for young individuals with disabilities. Additionally, this key position will advocate for enhanced workplace and labor market disability inclusion across seven nations spanning East, West, and Southern Africa.

The GTL will align the program’s design and execution with Sightsavers’ thematic and program strategies, spearheading the development of cutting-edge, inclusive methodologies to foster systemic transformation and sustainable outcomes.

This is a full-time, on-site position requiring the successful candidate to work from the Sight savers office in one of the following cities—Abuja, Accra, Lusaka, or Nairobi—five days a week.

We are seeking a motivated professional to oversee a diverse range of operational tasks. The incumbent will be tasked with managing project timelines, coordinating cross-functional teams, and ensuring adherence to company policies and industry standards. Additionally, the role demands the ability to analyze performance metrics, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement strategic solutions. Strong communication skills are essential, as the position requires frequent collaboration with stakeholders at all levels. The ideal candidate must also possess expertise in budget oversight, risk assessment, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Offer strategic technical guidance for a multinational initiative aimed at enhancing digital competencies and employment prospects among young individuals with disabilities, while promoting disability inclusion in workplaces and labor markets throughout East, West, and Southern Africa.

Work collaboratively with fellow Global Technical Leads and implementing partners to facilitate cohesive, high-impact delivery of program objectives.

Transform and lead pioneering strategic initiatives that elevate the quality, relevance, and long-term sustainability of Sight savers’ mission, driving meaningful innovation across the organization.

Collaborate across departments on initiatives encompassing research, innovation, policy development, advocacy, and communications, engaging with both internal colleagues and external partners to drive collective impact.

As a senior representative of Sight savers, you will serve as a leading authority on digital inclusion and the digital economy, engaging with national, regional, and international networks, conferences, and sector platforms to advance our mission.

The role requires travel commitments totaling up to 12 weeks annually.

Seeking candidates with a strong background in relevant technical or professional competencies, along with hands-on experience in the field. Proficiency in industry-specific tools, methodologies, or frameworks is essential, as is a proven ability to apply expertise to solve complex problems. The ideal applicant will demonstrate adaptability in dynamic environments, exceptional attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous learning. Previous roles requiring similar responsibilities—such as project management, data analysis, or technical development—are highly valued. Additionally, familiarity with emerging trends or best practices in the domain is preferred.

The successful candidate will demonstrate extensive knowledge of employment and labor market dynamics within Africa’s digital and IT industries, with a particular focus on skills’ development, training, and workforce integration initiatives. They will exhibit a deep commitment to inclusive growth and the advancement of disability rights, driving forward innovative and high-impact programs to foster meaningful change.

As a strategic partner, the individual will collaborate effectively across varied teams and global locations. This role requires up to 12 weeks of international travel annually to facilitate program execution and foster stakeholder relationships.

Jobholder Requirements

Essential:

A master’s degree or higher—ideally a PhD—in fields such as digital economy, digital policy, digital or economic sociology, political economy, development studies, global labor studies, or a closely related discipline is required, or equivalent professional experience may be considered.

Requires a solid grasp of contemporary discussions and challenges in artificial intelligence and digital technologies, as well as their impact on skills’ development, employment opportunities, fair work conditions, and labor market dynamics within African and Global South settings.

Seasoned professionals with a proven track record in designing, implementing, and scaling digital skills initiatives, vocational training programs, and pathways to employment are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will bring substantial experience from regions such as the global South, where they have successfully led transformative projects that bridge digital divides and enhance workforce readiness.

Professional experience in NGO or non-profit settings, with a focus on overseeing programs funded by donors, is required.

Demonstrated expertise in collaborating with diverse labor market stakeholders—with a particular focus on the private sector—to enhance employment opportunities and foster decent working conditions.

Demonstrates a comprehensive grasp of emerging trends in artificial intelligence and digital technologies, along with their broader impact on employment patterns and labor markets across African and Global South regions.

Fluent proficiency in both spoken and written English is required, along with the capacity to draft comprehensive reports and conduct effective presentations.

Analytical and strategic thinking capabilities are required, enabling the ability to develop plans from both programmatic and organizational viewpoints.

Proven ability to lead teams effectively, build strong professional networks, and cultivate meaningful relationships with stakeholders through strategic engagement and diplomatic communication.

Experience working on TVET systems.

With a proven track record of collaborating with tripartite labor market stakeholders—particularly private sector entities and those within digital industries—to enhance employment opportunities and promote fair work practices.

Demonstrates a strong capacity to cooperate with various departments and function seamlessly within multidisciplinary teams.

Experience in creating and modifying technical guidance materials and programming tools.

Demonstrates a firm dedication to fostering disability inclusion, promoting equality, and upholding justice within digital and employment environments.

Requires the capacity and readiness to undertake international travel for periods extending up to 12 weeks annually.

With a proven track record in championing the rights and needs of underrepresented communities, particularly in advancing disability inclusion, you demonstrate strong expertise in this area.

Proven fluency in French, both written and verbal, is essential for this role.
