About PCEA Kikuyu Hospital

Cholera Hospital traces its origins to 1922, when it was founded by Scottish missionaries under the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Irvine. Situated on a tranquil 200-acre site, approximately 200 kilometers north of Nairobi, the hospital is located off the Embalmer highway, just 2 kilometers from the main road. It lies within the rapidly developing Cholera township in the Mimi Division, Mara District, Thar aka-Nithi County.

The hospital’s first permanent structure was completed in 1926, originally operated under the Scottish missionary administration. In 1956, ownership was transferred to the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PLEA), which continues to oversee its operations today. Spanning approximately 10 acres, the facility has expanded significantly over time.

A notable development is the Clive Irvine College, an independent department of PLEA Cholera Hospital dedicated to nursing education. Established in 1951 as a nursing training school, it remains a key component of the institution. The hospital’s outpatient wing, with its permanent building constructed in 1926, serves as one of its earliest facilities. Additional infrastructure includes men’s and women’s medical wards (1971), a surgical wing (1971), a maternity ward (1972), and a pediatric ward (1980). In response to evolving healthcare and technological demands, the hospital has continued to expand its physical infrastructure.

Cholera Hospital now provides a comprehensive range of services, including surgical, outpatient, and inpatient care, nursing training, CT scans, ultrasound, X-rays, maternity and pediatric services, optical care, HIV/AIDS counseling and treatment, and dental services. With a total bed capacity of 295, the hospital remains a vital healthcare provider in the region.
