"Government-owned Kenyan energy firm accelerating geothermal development."
The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) operates as a 100% state-owned entity within Kenya’s energy sector. Established in 2008 as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), GDC was created to fast-track the exploitation of Kenya’s geothermal resources.
GDC’s mandate includes the development of steam fields and the commercialization of geothermal steam for electricity generation, supplying both KenGen and private investors. Geothermal steam—an eco-friendly and naturally abundant resource—serves as a key input for sustainable power production.
To mitigate exploration and drilling risks, the Kenyan government and multiple development partners have provided financial backing.
