Job Summary

Reporting to the ICT Manager, the Database Administrator oversees all operations essential to sustaining an effective database environment. This role involves designing, deploying, and sustaining database systems, as well as establishing and enforcing policies and procedures governing database management, security, maintenance, and utilization. Additionally, the Database Administrator provides training to staff on database management and usage.

Oversee and execute a comprehensive range of duties and tasks essential to the role, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and standards. Implement best practices in operational procedures to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and productivity. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver results that meet or exceed performance expectations. Address and resolve challenges proactively, leveraging analytical and problem-solving skills to mitigate risks and optimize outcomes. Maintain meticulous documentation and reporting to support transparency and compliance with relevant policies and regulations. Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation and process enhancements. Ensure adherence to deadlines while upholding the highest standards of quality and professionalism in all deliverables.

Install, configure, administer, and maintain database management systems to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and security, encompassing all phases from setup and customization to ongoing management and troubleshooting.

Analyze database performance metrics and introduce strategic enhancements to improve efficiency.

Oversee the execution of database backup, restoration, and recovery operations. Perform periodic backup and restoration validation to uphold high availability and ensure robust disaster recovery for mission-critical databases.

Implement robust security measures for the database, including access controls, user permissions, and auditing protocols. Additionally, oversee and monitor privileged access within the database infrastructure.

Modifying the database structure as required, based on specifications provided by application developers.

Execute database optimization tasks, including tuning, indexing, and capacity planning. Provide assistance with database upgrades, migrations, and patch management.

Crafting diverse reports by extracting data from the database as needed ensures timely and accurate information delivery for decision-making purposes.

Investigate and resolve system and database incidents and problems promptly. Serve as the escalation point for technical support concerning database-related issues, ensuring timely and effective resolution.

Ensure meticulous and up-to-date record-keeping of all database information to uphold data integrity and reliability.

Develop and enforce robust security measures for infrastructure and database systems, ensuring alignment with industry-leading best practices.

Engage in infrastructure and database initiatives, contributing to the implementation of new applications and systems. Provide assistance in deploying these technological solutions to ensure seamless integration and operational efficiency.

Serve as a secondary support resource for the System Administration team, providing assistance as needed to ensure seamless operational continuity and technical stability.

Proficient in analytical reasoning, strategic planning, and performance management, with a keen focus on delivering measurable outcomes. Demonstrates strong leadership capabilities, effective communication skills, and the ability to foster collaborative team environments. Requires expertise in problem-solving, decision-making, and adaptability to evolving business priorities. Familiarity with relevant industry standards and compliance regulations is essential. Prior experience in a supervisory or managerial role is preferred, along with a track record of driving operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives.

Proficient in Database Management concepts and principles, with the ability to effectively translate business requirements into Database Design and Maintenance. Demonstrates a strong grasp of industry best practices and strategic approaches.

Proven expertise in designing and documenting comprehensive database architecture and strategic plans, encompassing both tactical and project-level initiatives.

Proficient in analyzing data requirements and translating them into suitable database controls.

Proficiency in the underlying mechanics of operating systems and the principles governing network protocols is required.

Demonstrate strong analytical capabilities while efficiently handling numerous projects within stringent deadlines.

The candidate must possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with colleagues, develop robust professional connections at every organizational tier, and foster collaboration across diverse business units and external entities while aligning communications with core business objectives.

You must demonstrate exceptional proficiency in both verbal and written communication, as well as strong interpersonal skills, enabling you to collaborate seamlessly with the IT Department, project and application development teams, and other essential stakeholders.

Applicants must meet the following essential qualifications to be considered for the position. A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience is required, along with a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard software and tools, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills, are necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities are also expected. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate leadership experience and the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or an equivalent discipline is required.

Minimum 5 years of professional experience, with at least 3 years dedicated to Database Administration, is required. Prior experience within the FSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) sector is highly advantageous.

Preferred qualifications include any of the following certifications or related expertise: Oracle Database Administration Certified Professional, Microsoft SQL Server Certifications, or Red Hat Certified System Administrator.

Proficiency in the administration and maintenance of primary insurance systems and databases constitutes an additional asset.
