Job Objective/Purpose

Oversee a comprehensive range of duties encompassing the planning, coordination, and execution of core operational functions to ensure organizational objectives are met efficiently and effectively. Develop and implement strategies that enhance productivity, streamline processes, and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Daily inventory checks must be performed to verify the availability and operational status of all equipment. Any malfunctions or defects detected during these inspections should be promptly reported to the Bio-Medical Technician or Unit Manager for further action.

Ensure the financial sustainability and profitability of the unit while driving measurable growth initiatives.

Providing exceptional patient care and fostering productive partnerships with our stakeholders are core priorities.

Achieve financial targets by maintaining expenditures within budget parameters and ensuring prompt, precise invoicing for medications and services. Minimize invoice rejection rates to under 3% by verifying that all necessary pre-authorizations and documentation are completed accurately before submission.

Ensure strict adherence to Avenue’s corporate governance policies.

Monitor, identify, and escalate any instances of fraud or criminal conduct without delay.

Liaise with the Nurse in charge to fully implement internal audit recommendations and attain satisfactory ratings in subsequent audits.

You are expected to thoroughly familiarize yourself with all systems, policies, and procedures outlined in the Hospital Manual, with particular emphasis on those related to the delivery of medical services, including admission and discharge protocols, nurses’ reporting standards, ward equipment and supplies management, as well as emergency response guidelines.

Maintain a comprehensive log of all sentinel incidents or events, ensuring timely submission of reports within a 24-hour window through the designated reporting tools.

Ensure compliance with infection control protocols outlined in the hospital manual, while implementing and adhering to the specified infection control bundles, including SSI, VAP, CACTI, and CLA BSI, as applicable.

Oversee patient attendants in accordance with their designated duties and responsibilities.

Active participation in ward rounds and receive handover reports from the outgoing nurse on shift

Evaluate the patient’s goals of care in consultation with their next of kin to ensure alignment with their preferences and treatment objectives.

Diligently document and securely store patients’ valuables to maintain their safety and integrity throughout their stay.

Ensuring meticulous documentation of patient records and conducting thorough reviews; collaborating with fellow clinicians and consultants as necessary.

Verify that every diagnostic request, encompassing both laboratory and radiology examinations, includes the patient’s relevant clinical information.

To uphold patient safety, adherence to the six International Patient Safety Goals (Ipsus) is essential. This includes verifying patient identity, facilitating clear and effective communication, safeguarding the administration of high-alert medications, ensuring accuracy in site identification and surgical procedures, minimizing the risk of healthcare-associated infections, and preventing patient harm from falls.

Educate patients and their families about health-related topics, ensuring they understand key issues and best practices for maintaining and improving their well-being.

The nursing care plan must be crafted to prioritize patient needs effectively.

Ensure the emergency trolley is meticulously organized for efficient use during resuscitation efforts. Maintain a fully stocked inventory of drugs and supplies, promptly removing and reporting any damaged equipment. A comprehensive checklist must be maintained and updated on the 1st and 16th of each month, as well as whenever necessary.

Update physicians and consulting specialists promptly as soon as patient progress updates or critical test results become accessible.

Execute all invasive nursing interventions utilizing aseptic technique to maintain strict infection control standards.

Daily, enter unit-specific data accurately and without delay.

All consultants must ensure that they have thoroughly explained the necessary procedures to relevant parties and have secured their consent accordingly.

Thoroughly finalize all requisite official checklists for patients in advance of any scheduled procedures, including those in theater, radiology, and renal settings.

Maintain strict adherence to patient privacy and confidentiality protocols in accordance with established policies.

Administer medications as prescribed by healthcare providers, ensuring accuracy, adherence to protocols, and proper documentation in patient records. Verify correct dosage, patient identity, and timing while monitoring for adverse reactions or therapeutic effects. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to maintain safe and effective medication administration practices.

Ensure strict compliance with the ten essential principles of medication administration, including verifying the correct patient, medication, dosage, route, and timing, while maintaining thorough documentation, providing client education, conducting assessments, evaluating outcomes, and respecting the client’s right to refuse treatment.

Submit all new medication orders to the pharmacy without delay, ensuring STAT doses are administered within a 30-minute timeframe.

Ensure the secure storage of D.D.A. medications and maintain the drug register in strict accordance with unit-specific guidelines.

All unused medications must be reimbursed without delay.

All verbal prescriptions must be countersigned by the authorized physician within 24 hours in accordance with hospital protocol.

Demonstrates adherence to the Nursing Council of Kenya’s established standards for patient care and treatment, ensuring the delivery of professional and ethical nursing practices.

Ensure high levels of client satisfaction—including patients, consultants, and other stakeholders—by delivering exceptional care quality, fostering clear and consistent communication, providing timely feedback, and escalating unresolved concerns to the Unit Manager while actively tracking follow-up actions and driving continuous improvement.

Person Specification

Earned a Diploma or Bachelor of Science in Nursing, ensuring a solid foundation in healthcare principles and practices.

A Higher Diploma in Neonatal/Pediatric Critical Care Nursing (NICU/PICK) is an essential qualification for this role.

A current, active license from the Nursing Council of Kenya is required.

Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLAS) is required.

With a minimum of two years of dedicated experience as a NICU/PICK Nurse, you possess the essential background required for this role.

You demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication abilities, a keen attention to detail, and a results-driven, dependable approach to your work.
