This position is responsible for dispensing medications to patients, ensuring the availability of required drugs, maintaining accurate records of dispensed medications, and processing correct billing in accordance with established protocols and the hospital’s patient care objectives.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Deliver a superior pharmacy service to patients, collaborating effectively with other professional team members within specified areas.
Verify prescriptions for correctness and appropriateness, consulting prescribing physicians to address any discrepancies and promote the secure, cost-effective, and appropriate utilization of medications and other pharmaceutical products.
Monitor patient reactions to therapy, evaluate potential drug-disease interactions, and review prescribed medications for appropriate indications.
Document and report any adverse drug reactions observed in patients during medication administration.
Perform ongoing clinical reviews of all treatment sheets and prescriptions to verify treatment appropriateness, identify potential drug interactions, confirm dosing accuracy, and ensure adherence to prescribed medication administration protocols.
Engage collaboratively in the complete drug inventory cycle, including requisitioning supplies, receiving deliveries from central stores, and immediately placing items on shelves. Conduct routine, random, and quarterly inventory audits, and systematically reconcile any discrepancies between recorded and actual stock levels.
Responsible for managing all pharmaceutical-related matters that demand attention, including the pricing of medications, tracking patient credits, and ensuring the replacement of damaged or expired inventory.
Verify pharmacy drug expiry dates and promptly return medications nearing expiration to the store, adhering strictly to the Short Expiry Drug Policy.
Ensure that extemporaneous preparations for inpatients and outpatients, as well as solutions for the wards, are correctly prepared and labeled.
Assist in developing and executing hospital policies pertaining to medication use, as well as pharmacy standard operating procedures.
Engage in ward pharmacy services in accordance with the established Hospital policy.
Engage meticulously in the preparation and reconstitution of chemotherapy medications, ensuring full compliance with established cytotoxic handling protocols.
Deliver patient counseling and distribute informational materials to all in-patients and out-patients as needed, ensuring timely availability and accessibility of these resources.
Maintain ongoing communication with the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, the Ministry of Health, and other relevant professional organizations to ensure the department remains informed of all advancements in the pharmaceutical sector.
Conduct and facilitate hands-on training sessions for newly hired employees and pharmacy technicians to ensure they develop essential skills and competencies in a practical setting.
The position may involve additional duties as determined by the supervisor, as needed, from time to time.
Seeking a candidate with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, coupled with at least three years of relevant professional experience. Preference will be given to individuals holding an advanced degree or possessing specialized certifications pertinent to the role. Demonstrated expertise through progressive responsibility in prior positions is highly valued, along with a track record of success in similar environments.
Hold an accredited Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from a reputable academic institution.
Must possess current registration and an active practicing license from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.
