Job Objective/Purpose

Key responsibilities encompass the oversight and execution of strategic initiatives designed to enhance operational efficiency and drive organizational growth. This position demands meticulous collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless project delivery, strict adherence to established timelines, and compliance with all relevant policies and regulations. Daily verification of available equipment is required to confirm their operational status and adequate inventory levels. Any observed malfunctions must be promptly communicated to the Bio-Medical Technician or Unit Manager for resolution.

To guarantee the financial sustainability and profitability of the unit, it is essential to implement strategic initiatives that foster continuous growth. This involves analyzing financial performance, optimizing resource allocation, and identifying opportunities to expand revenue streams while controlling costs. By maintaining a vigilant oversight of budgets, forecasts, and key performance indicators, the role ensures the unit remains competitive and aligns with broader organizational objectives. Additionally, developing and executing actionable plans to enhance operational efficiency will contribute to long-term financial health and scalability.

To guarantee financial objectives are achieved, oversee expenditures to remain within budget while ensuring prompt and precise billing for drugs and services. Maintain an invoice rejection rate below 3% by verifying that all necessary pre-authorizations and documentation have been completed.

Monitor and investigate all instances of suspected fraudulent or criminal behavior, promptly documenting and escalating findings to the appropriate authorities or senior management for further action.

Collaborate closely with the Nurse in Charge to ensure the thorough execution of internal audit recommendations and achieve favorable outcomes in future audits.

You must familiarize yourself thoroughly with all systems, policies, and procedures detailed in the Hospital Manual, with particular emphasis on those governing the delivery of medical services—including admission and discharge protocols, nursing documentation standards, ward equipment and supply management, as well as emergency response guidelines.

Document all sentinel incidents and events promptly, ensuring reports are submitted within 24 hours by utilizing the designated tools.

Maintain and uphold infection control protocols in strict accordance with the hospital’s established manual, ensuring full compliance with all applicable infection control bundles, including SSI, VAP, CACTI, and CLA BSI.

Oversee patient attendants, ensuring they fulfill their assigned responsibilities in accordance with established protocols and job requirements.

Engage actively in ward rounds and obtain handover reports from the outgoing nurse upon shift completion.

Conduct a thorough discussion with the immediate family members to clearly outline the patient’s objectives regarding their medical care.

The professional must assume responsibility for accurately documenting and securely storing patients’ personal belongings.

Accurate documentation of patient records and thorough review are required, along with collaboration with fellow clinicians and consultants as necessary.

Please verify that all diagnostic orders, including laboratory and radiology requests, are accompanied by the patient’s relevant clinical information.

To uphold patient safety, strict adherence to the six International Patient Safety Goals (Ipsus) is essential, including accurate patient identification, clear and effective communication, proper management of high-alert medications, ensuring correct-site procedures and surgical interventions, minimizing healthcare-associated infections, and mitigating fall-related risks to prevent patient harm.

Educate patients and their families regarding health-related concerns, ensuring they understand relevant medical information and treatment plans.

In the context of documented nursing care plans, patient needs are assessed and organized with a clear hierarchy to ensure timely and effective care delivery.

Ensure the emergency trolley is meticulously maintained for immediate accessibility during resuscitation efforts by keeping essential drugs and supplies fully stocked, promptly removing any damaged equipment, and reporting it without delay. A comprehensive checklist must be consistently updated on the 1st and 16th of each month, as well as whenever necessary.

Consultants and doctors should be promptly informed of any critical values and patient progress upon availability.

Execute all invasive nursing procedures utilizing aseptic technique to maintain a sterile environment and prevent infection.

Daily, input unit-specific data accurately and without delay.

All pertinent consultants must ensure procedures are thoroughly explained and consent is duly obtained from all involved parties.

Prior to any procedures, including those in theater, radiology, and renal departments, it is essential to thoroughly complete all official checklists for each patient.

Maintain strict adherence to patient privacy and confidentiality protocols at all times in accordance with established policies.

Administer medications as prescribed by healthcare providers, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to protocols. Monitor patients for adverse reactions or side effects, documenting any changes in condition promptly. Verify dosages, routes, and frequencies to prevent errors, and maintain precise records of all administered drugs. Collaborate with medical teams to adjust treatment plans when necessary, ensuring optimal therapeutic outcomes. Follow infection control measures and sterile techniques during administration to uphold patient safety.

Ensure compliance with the ten fundamental principles of medication administration, which include verifying the correct patient, medication, dosage, route, and timing; maintaining accurate documentation; providing client education; conducting thorough assessments; performing evaluations; and respecting the client’s right to refuse treatment.

Submit all new prescriptions to the pharmacy without delay, ensuring that STAT medications are administered within 30 minutes of receipt.

Ensure the secure storage of D.D.A. drugs and maintain an accurate, up-to-date drug register in compliance with unit-specific guidelines.

Refund all unused medications without delay to ensure prompt reimbursement for customers.

All verbal prescriptions must be authenticated by the attending physician within 24 hours, in accordance with hospital protocol.

You will adhere to the Nursing Council of Kenya’s established professional standards for patient care and treatment, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and best practices in nursing.

Ensuring client satisfaction across all stakeholders—patients, consultants, and others—requires delivering optimal care quality, maintaining clear and effective communication, providing timely feedback, and escalating unresolved issues to the Unit Manager. Follow-up actions and continuous improvement must also be demonstrated to address concerns and enhance overall experience.

Person Specification

Earned a Diploma or Bachelor of Science in Nursing to fulfill the educational prerequisites for this role.

A Higher Diploma in Neonatal/Pediatric Critical Care Nursing (NICU/PICK) is an essential qualification for this role.

A current and valid license issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya is required.

Maintain current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), as well as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLAS).

A minimum of two years of hands-on experience in a NICU or PICK setting is required.

Proven ability to build strong interpersonal relationships and communicate effectively, coupled with meticulous attention to detail, drives results while maintaining unwavering reliability in all responsibilities.
