The Global Technical Lead (GTL) will spearhead the delivery of expert technical support for a multi-country initiative aimed at strengthening digital skills and employment prospects among young people with disabilities. Additionally, this critical position will advocate for enhanced disability inclusion in workplaces and labor markets across seven nations in East, West, and Southern Africa.

The Global Technical Lead (GTL) will be responsible for designing and executing the program in accordance with Sight savers’ thematic and program strategies, while spearheading the development of forward-thinking, inclusive methodologies that foster systemic transformation and deliver lasting, sustainable results.

This is a full-time, on-site position requiring the successful candidate to work from the Sight savers office in Abuja, Accra, Lusaka, or Nairobi five days a week.

Oversee a comprehensive range of duties, including the planning, coordination, and execution of key initiatives, while ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and compliance standards. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to facilitate seamless communication and drive project milestones. Analyze performance metrics and operational data to identify trends, optimize processes, and recommend strategic improvements. Serve as a primary point of contact for stakeholders, addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and maintaining transparent reporting channels. Maintain rigorous adherence to safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and ethical guidelines in all operational activities.

Offer strategic technical guidance for a cross-regional initiative aimed at enhancing digital competencies and employment prospects among young individuals with disabilities, concurrently fostering greater disability inclusion in workplaces and labor markets throughout East, West, and Southern Africa.

Work collaboratively with Global Technical Leads and implementing partners to align efforts and achieve program objectives with maximum impact.

Spearhead innovation by designing and implementing pioneering strategic initiatives that elevate the quality, pertinence, and long-term viability of Sight savers’ operations.

You will collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders on cross-organizational initiatives focused on research, innovation, policy, advocacy, and communications.

As a senior-level representative of Sight savers, you will serve as a leading subject-matter expert in digital inclusion and the digital economy, engaging with national, regional, and international networks, conferences, and sector platforms.

The position requires up to 12 weeks of travel annually.

Skills and experience should include a minimum of five years in a managerial role within a fast-paced environment, with proven leadership in team development and project execution. Candidates must demonstrate strong analytical abilities, exceptional problem-solving skills, and the capacity to drive operational efficiency while maintaining high performance standards. Experience in budget oversight, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement is essential, along with proficiency in industry-specific software and tools. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and senior leadership. A results-driven mindset and the ability to adapt to evolving business needs are critical for success in this role.

The GTL will possess extensive knowledge of Africa’s digital and IT sectors, particularly in employment and labor market dynamics, skills development, training, and employment transitions. They will demonstrate a strong dedication to inclusive development and advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities through pioneering and effective initiatives.

This position requires a strategic collaborator capable of effectively engaging with diverse teams and operating across multiple geographies. Up to 12 weeks of international travel per year will be necessary to facilitate program delivery and maintain stakeholder relationships.

The ideal candidate must meet the following qualifications: a minimum of three years of experience in a related field, a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, and strong proficiency in data analysis, project management, and communication. They should demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, software, and best practices is essential. Additionally, the role demands adaptability to evolving priorities and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Essential:

A master’s degree or higher qualification is required, with a PhD being strongly preferred, in digital economy, digital policy, digital or economic sociology, political economy, development studies, global labor studies, or a closely related discipline. Alternatively, equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of formal academic credentials.

A solid grasp of contemporary discussions and challenges in artificial intelligence and digital technologies, along with their potential effects on skills’ development, employment, decent work, and labor markets across African and Global South contexts, is essential.

Experienced in designing, implementing, and expanding initiatives focused on digital literacy, workforce training, and employment transition—particularly within regions of the Global South.

Proficiency in managing donor-funded programs within non-governmental or non-profit organizations is required.

Demonstrated capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse labor market stakeholders—particularly private sector entities—to enhance employment prospects and foster quality work opportunities.

Possesses a comprehensive grasp of emerging trends in artificial intelligence and digital advancements, along with their broader impacts on employment patterns and labor market dynamics across African and Global South regions.

Fluent proficiency in both spoken and written English is required, with strong capabilities in composing comprehensive reports and delivering effective presentations.

Possesses exceptional analytical and strategic thinking capabilities, enabling the development of plans from both programmatic and organizational viewpoints.

Proven expertise in leading teams, cultivating professional networks, and fostering strong stakeholder relationships, coupled with exceptional diplomatic acumen and a keen sense of tact.

Possesses practical experience in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (VET) systems.

Experienced in collaborating with key tripartite labor market stakeholders—particularly within the private sector and digital industries—to enhance employment opportunities and promote decent work standards.

Demonstrates a strong capacity for cross-departmental collaboration and thrives in diverse team environments.

Developing and refining technical guidance and programming tools represents a key area of expertise, with a focus on creating and modifying these resources to meet evolving needs.

Demonstrates a firm dedication to fostering disability inclusion, upholding equality, and advancing justice within digital and employment environments.

Capable of traveling internationally for up to 12 weeks annually, demonstrating both willingness and the capacity to fulfill such requirements.

Desirable:

Advocacy experience specifically focused on marginalized communities, with a strong emphasis on disability inclusion, is required.

Fluency in written and spoken French is required.
