Oversee and execute a variety of tasks encompassing operational, administrative, and strategic functions to support organizational objectives. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline workflows, enhance productivity, and ensure seamless project execution. The Researcher will spearhead and collaborate on sophisticated research initiatives exploring the convergence of education, technology, and digital advancements, with the aim of producing actionable insights to shape policy and practice within African education systems. Key duties associated with this role include:

Strengthen AP HRC’s expertise regarding the application and implications of technology in education, with particular emphasis on the responsible integration and expansion of AI and other educational technologies within African primary and secondary education systems.

Spearhead or collaborate on research initiatives, focusing on comprehensive assessments of digital technologies (and other innovations) within African primary and secondary education systems.

You will play a key role in advancing project management, policy engagement, and strategic planning initiatives within the Human Development Theme and across the broader Center, with a focus on converting research insights into practical, evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, educators, and developers of educational technology.

Develop successful proposals to secure funding while cultivating and sustaining robust partnerships with both local and international stakeholders.

Assess the effectiveness, fairness, and ethical considerations of digital technology, with a focus on its application in resource-constrained settings. This involves supporting AP HRC’s initiatives in education and technology, as well as artificial intelligence.

Analyze the adoption, utilization, and effectiveness of digital learning platforms, mobile learning applications, and other technological tools designed to enhance foundational literacy and numeracy, improve teacher performance, and promote equity in education.

To craft comprehensive frameworks that facilitate the incorporation of digital technology into educational systems, one must consolidate and analyze research findings. This involves active collaboration with ministries of education, Edtech hubs, civil society organizations, and international partners to advocate for and implement policies and practices grounded in solid evidence.

Oversee and execute a comprehensive range of critical duties, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and operational standards. Develop, implement, and monitor strategic initiatives to enhance efficiency, productivity, and performance across assigned functions. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to streamline processes, resolve challenges, and drive continuous improvement. Maintain rigorous adherence to compliance, safety, and quality assurance protocols while fostering a culture of accountability and excellence. Prepare and present detailed reports, analyses, and presentations to stakeholders, providing actionable insights to support informed decision-making. Manage resources effectively, prioritizing tasks based on strategic importance and organizational needs.

The scope of responsibilities for the Researcher will vary based on the appointment level, which may include Postdoctoral, Associate Research Scientist, Research Scientist, or Senior Research Scientist.

Offer strategic guidance and direction to scientific research teams or projects focused on education and technology, particularly in the realm of AI-driven educational solutions. Manage data quality and conduct thorough analysis, upholding rigorous, ethical, and robust research methodologies throughout the process.

Spearhead the creation and advancement of research proposals and fundraising initiatives specifically for projects under the Human Development Theme.

Mentor early-career researchers, including research officers and interns, and lead training sessions within the Center’s programs as required.

Acquire and oversee the essential human, financial, and material resources required to successfully execute the designated project and/or program.

Enhance the Unit/Theme’s strategic planning efforts and drive policy engagement initiatives to foster alignment with overarching objectives.

At this role, you will serve as the Center’s representative in prestigious national, regional, and international forums—such as technical working groups and expert committees—engaging in high-level discussions and collaborative initiatives.

Develop and assist in the creation of institutional publications such as policy briefs, research briefs, fact sheets, research reports, and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Seeking candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline, alongside at least three years of hands-on experience in software development or system administration. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++ is essential, along with familiarity with databases like SQL or NoSQL. Strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and a proven track record of delivering high-quality technical solutions are required. Experience with cloud platforms, DevOps practices, or cybersecurity is highly advantageous.

A doctoral degree in a pertinent field is required, including but not limited to education and technology, machine learning in education, educational data science, curriculum and instruction with a technological emphasis, or a closely related discipline.

Seeking candidates with a demonstrated background in research institutions or comparable environments, specializing in high-caliber studies related to education, digital technology, and/or artificial intelligence. Demonstrated success in directing or overseeing research initiatives or projects is a critical requirement.

Strong quantitative and/or qualitative research expertise is essential, with mixed-methods experience highly beneficial. Proficiency in data analysis software such as STATE, SPSS, R, Python, Vivo, or ATLAS.ti is mandatory.

Skilled in crafting precise and impactful scientific documents, evidenced by a strong portfolio of peer-reviewed publications and awarded grant proposals.

Fluency in English is essential, with proficiency in French considered highly beneficial.

Possesses exceptional proficiency in crafting persuasive proposals and a proven track record of securing research funding.

Desirable

Skilled in executing impact evaluations of educational interventions, with a particular emphasis on technology-based initiatives.

Proficient in African education frameworks, with expertise in evaluating foundational literacy and numeracy through widely recognized assessment instruments such as ERA and EMMA.

Proficiency in qualitative and mixed-method research methodologies is essential for assessing the efficacy of educational technology innovations.

Candidates with varying levels of post-PhD experience may be considered for appointment at different levels: Postdoctoral (0-2 years after PhD), Associate Research Scientist (3-5 years after PhD), Research Scientist (6-11 years after PhD), or Senior Research Scientist (12+ years after PhD), contingent upon their qualifications and professional achievements.
