The Northern Rangeland Trust (NRT) is hiring a seasoned and visionary leader to fill the role of Carbon Program Director, responsible for guiding the Northern Kenya Rangeland Carbon Project (NKRCP)—a groundbreaking, community-driven soil carbon initiative spanning 22 conservancies across northern Kenya.

The initiative fosters rangeland restoration, biodiversity conservation, sustainable grazing practices, climate resilience, and enduring community livelihoods by leveraging carbon finance and landscape stewardship.

The Carbon Program Director will spearhead strategic, technical, operational, and stakeholder leadership for the Northern Kenya Rangeland Carbon Project (NKRCP), ensuring alignment with organizational goals and project objectives.

This position will manage the execution of projects, ensure adherence to carbon standards and national regulations, coordinate governance efforts, and foster community engagement while establishing benefit-sharing frameworks and maintaining stakeholder relations. Additionally, the role will be responsible for delivering conservation and livelihood outcomes across all participating conservancies.

The ideal candidate will collaborate extensively with senior leadership at NRT, community governance bodies, governmental agencies, technical collaborators, and additional stakeholders to uphold the project’s technical soundness, social acceptance, financial prudence, and alignment with enduring rangeland conservation and community development objectives.

Oversee a range of critical duties encompassing strategic development, operational efficiency, and team leadership to drive organizational success. Implement and refine processes to enhance productivity, ensuring alignment with company objectives and industry best practices. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to execute projects, resolve challenges, and foster innovation while maintaining high standards of accountability and performance. Monitor key performance indicators to assess progress, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions as needed. Serve as a key liaison between departments, stakeholders, and leadership to facilitate seamless communication and coordination. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies to mitigate risks and uphold corporate integrity.

The position will entail overseeing and executing key responsibilities that include ensuring all assigned tasks are completed accurately and on schedule, managing project deliverables, and maintaining clear communication with stakeholders to align expectations. Additionally, the role will involve analyzing data to identify trends, preparing detailed reports for leadership review, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive efficiency and innovation. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold high standards of quality, adhere to company policies and procedures, and contribute to strategic planning initiatives.

Delivering executive leadership and strategic supervision, we ensure the successful execution of projects across collaborating conservancies.

Overseeing adherence to carbon standards, Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems, environmental safeguards, validation protocols, and Kenya’s regulatory framework for carbon markets.

Providing assistance for governance frameworks, Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (EPIC) mechanisms, benefit-sharing agreements, and institutional transition strategies constitutes the primary responsibilities.

Engaging proactively with diverse stakeholders—including communities, governmental bodies, donors, technical collaborators, and conservation organizations—will be a key responsibility of this role.

Responsible for directing financial management, implementing risk management strategies, administering grievance redress systems, and ensuring the integrity of project accountability mechanisms.

Supporting the integration of carbon finance initiatives with rangeland restoration efforts, biodiversity conservation strategies, and community livelihood objectives.

Seeking a candidate with a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, supplemented by at least three years of professional experience in a similar role. The ideal applicant will possess strong analytical skills, proficiency in data management software, and excellent written and verbal communication abilities. Duties include conducting market research, developing strategic plans, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to achieve organizational objectives. Familiarity with industry regulations and compliance standards is essential, as is the capacity to manage multiple projects concurrently while meeting tight deadlines.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

Holders of an advanced degree in environmental management, climate change, natural resource management, governance, law, economics, business administration, sustainable development, social sciences, or a cognate discipline are encouraged to apply.

With a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible senior leadership experience in fields such as conservation, climate finance, community development, natural resource management, or large-scale program management, candidates should demonstrate a strong background in these areas.

Proven expertise in leading multifaceted initiatives that engage diverse stakeholders, including communities, governmental bodies, funding organizations, technical collaborators, and private sector entities, is essential.

Candidates with prior involvement in carbon initiatives, Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes, auditing, Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (EPIC), safeguard protocols, distribution of benefits, or climate funding mechanisms will be highly preferred.

Professional experience interfacing with community institutions, conservancy governance frameworks, customary leadership bodies, and county or national government entities in northern Kenya is required.
