Key Responsibilities
Assist in the development of the national oil spill response contingency plan, with a focus on coastal and inland waterways.
Assist in reviewing and updating the national oil spill response contingency plan, covering both coastal and inland waters.
Support the execution of the national oil spill response contingency plan for both coastal and inland waters.
Assist in developing and executing strategies to monitor and mitigate oil spills in both coastal and inland water environments.
Collaborate with pertinent stakeholders to safeguard the marine environment from the impacts of shipping operations.
Conduct pollution prevention inspections at Kenyan ports and navigable waterways as part of the assigned responsibilities.
Support the organization of public awareness initiatives focused on preventing pollution originating from vessels.
Assist with the execution of international conventions and related instruments focused on marine pollution response and coordination efforts.
Seeking a candidate with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, along with at least three years of hands-on experience in software development. Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++ is essential, along with experience with databases, APIs, and cloud services. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment are required. Familiarity with agile methodologies and version control systems like Git is a must. Excellent communication skills for both technical and non-technical stakeholders are also necessary.
The position requires a candidate with expertise in academic research, teaching, or related fields, holding at least a master’s degree, preferably a doctorate. Proficiency in curriculum development, student mentorship, and publication in peer-reviewed journals is essential. Responsibilities include delivering lectures, designing course materials, evaluating student performance, and contributing to institutional committees. Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills are necessary, along with a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment. Experience with grant writing and interdisciplinary collaboration is advantageous.
Holding a valid Certificate of Competency as a Marine Engineer Officer, in accordance with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), is required for this position.
Earned a Certificate of Competency as a Deck Officer in compliance with STCW standards.
A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required for this position.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering is required for this position.
A Bachelor’s degree in Marine Environment or a closely related field is required for this position.
A bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science is required for this position.
