The Global Technical Lead (GTL) will spearhead the delivery of exceptional technical support for an expansive, multi-country initiative aimed at bolstering digital competencies and employment prospects among young individuals with disabilities. Additionally, this critical position will advocate for enhanced workplace and labor market inclusion for people with disabilities across seven nations spanning East, West, and Southern Africa.

The Global Technical Lead (GTL) will align the program’s design and implementation with Sight savers’ thematic and program strategies, spearheading the development of innovative, inclusive methodologies to catalyze systemic transformation and foster sustainable outcomes.

This is a full-time, in-person position requiring the successful candidate to work from the Sight savers office in Abuja, Accra, Lusaka, or Nairobi, five days a week.

Responsibilities

Offer strategic technical guidance for a cross-regional initiative aimed at enhancing digital competencies and employment prospects among young individuals with disabilities, simultaneously fostering greater disability inclusion in workplaces and labor markets throughout East, West, and Southern Africa.

Work collaboratively with Global Technical Leads and implementation partners worldwide to achieve unified, high-impact results aligned with program objectives.

Spearhead strategic initiatives to foster innovation, ensuring they elevate the quality, relevance, and sustainability of Sight savers’ projects and operations.

Collaborate on enterprise-wide initiatives spanning research, innovation, policy development, advocacy, and communications, partnering closely with internal colleagues and external stakeholders.

As a senior subject-matter expert in digital inclusion and the digital economy, you will represent Sight savers in high-level engagements across national, regional, and international forums, including networks, conferences, and sector-specific platforms.

The role may require the incumbent to undertake travel commitments amounting to as many as twelve weeks annually.

Seeking a candidate with a proven track record in relevant technical or professional competencies, complemented by hands-on experience in related fields. The ideal applicant must demonstrate expertise through formal education, certifications, or practical application, ensuring alignment with the role’s demands. Proficiency in specific tools, methodologies, or industry best practices is essential, along with the ability to adapt to evolving challenges. The GTL will demonstrate extensive proficiency in employment and labor market dynamics specific to Africa’s digital and IT industries, with a focus on skills’ development, training initiatives, and pathways to employment. They will exhibit a fervent dedication to inclusive development and a steadfast resolve to promote the rights of individuals with disabilities through creative and transformative programmatic approaches.

This position requires a strategic collaborator who thrives in cross-functional and global team environments. The role entails up to 12 weeks of international travel annually to advance program delivery and foster stakeholder engagement.

The ideal candidate must meet the following qualifications: a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, at least three years of professional experience in a comparable role, and proficiency in industry-standard software tools. Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Prior to project management experience is preferred, as is familiarity with regulatory compliance standards. Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities are also required to ensure timely and accurate completion of tasks.

Essential:

A master’s degree or higher is required in digital economy, digital policy, digital or economic sociology, political economy, development studies, global labor studies, or a related field, with a PhD being highly preferred. Alternatively, equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.

Professionals should exhibit a clear grasp of contemporary discussions and challenges surrounding artificial intelligence and digital technologies, as well as their broader implications for skills development, employment opportunities, fair work standards, and labor market dynamics across African and Global South regions.

Professional rewrite:

Experience working on TVET systems.

Proficiency in collaborating with tripartite labor market stakeholders, particularly private sector entities—especially within digital industries—is essential for driving improvements in employment and fostering decent work conditions.

Demonstrated capability to foster cross-departmental collaboration and contribute effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Skilled in designing and modifying technical guidance documents and software solutions to meet evolving needs.

Demonstrates a strong dedication to fostering disability inclusion, promoting equality, and upholding justice within digital and employment environments.

Demonstrates both the flexibility and capability to undertake international travel for periods extending up to 12 weeks annually.

Desirable:

Advocacy experience for underrepresented communities, with a specific focus on disability inclusion, is required.

Fluent command of the French language is required.
