Oxfam in Africa is looking for a highly skilled Head of Humanitarian to lead and strategically oversee humanitarian preparedness and response initiatives throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

As a vital part of the Senior Leadership Team, you will develop and implement Oxfam’s humanitarian strategy, guaranteeing that crisis responses are prompt, effective, and adhere to international benchmarks. You will spearhead a team of humanitarian advisors, advance regional preparedness initiatives, manage emergency interventions, and foster stronger partnerships across country offices, affiliates, and Oxfam’s Global Humanitarian Team. Additionally, you will engage in humanitarian policy development and advocacy while championing the LHL agenda and advancing Oxfam’s broader global commitments.

This position demands strategic leadership, operational management, and external advocacy, positioning Oxfam as a key humanitarian organization throughout the continent.

The position operates under the supervision of the Programs and Influencing Director for Oxfam in Africa, with matrix management provided by the Deputy Humanitarian Director of the Global Humanitarian Team (GHT).

What we’re looking for

We are in search of a seasoned humanitarian leader with a strategic mindset and a proven track record in overseeing intricate emergency responses across varied settings. Your responsibilities will encompass providing expert guidance in humanitarian preparedness, coordinating response efforts, and contributing to policy formulation, while ensuring a comprehensive grasp of gender dynamics, protection frameworks, and internationally recognized humanitarian principles.

You must demonstrate strong analytical and decision-making skills, capable of managing complex challenges while guiding high-performing teams and engaging diverse stakeholders—such as governments, UN agencies, and partners. Fluency in both English and French is required, complemented by the ability to thrive in dynamic, high-pressure settings and accommodate frequent, short-notice travel, including extended assignments.
