The Northern Rangeland Trust (NRT) invites applications for the position of Carbon Program Director, a senior leadership role requiring extensive strategic expertise. This individual will oversee the Northern Kenya Rangeland Carbon Project (NKRCP), a groundbreaking, community-driven soil carbon initiative spanning 22 conservancies across northern Kenya, ensuring its effective implementation and impact.

The initiative fosters rangeland restoration, biodiversity conservation, sustainable grazing practices, climate resilience, and the enduring prosperity of local communities by leveraging carbon finance and landscape stewardship initiatives.

The Carbon Program Director will spearhead strategic, technical, operational, and stakeholder leadership for the Northern Kenya Rangeland Carbon Project (NKRCP), ensuring alignment with organizational goals and driving impactful outcomes.

This position will be responsible for managing project execution, ensuring adherence to carbon standards and national regulatory frameworks, and coordinating governance structures. Additionally, it will involve engaging with local communities, developing benefit-sharing mechanisms, maintaining stakeholder relationships, and delivering on conservation objectives and livelihood improvements across all participating conservancies.

The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with senior leadership at NRT, community governance bodies, governmental entities, technical collaborators, and other relevant stakeholders to uphold technical integrity, social legitimacy, financial prudence, and alignment with rangeland conservation and community development objectives over the long term.

Oversee a range of critical duties encompassing strategic planning, project execution, and operational oversight to ensure organizational objectives are consistently achieved. Develop and implement comprehensive policies, procedures, and performance metrics to enhance efficiency and compliance across all departments. Collaborate with senior leadership to align departmental goals with broader company strategies, fostering a cohesive and productive work environment. Lead cross-functional teams, delegate tasks effectively, and monitor progress to guarantee timely and high-quality project delivery. Analyze data and performance indicators to identify trends, address inefficiencies, and implement corrective measures as needed. Serve as the primary liaison between executive leadership and operational staff, facilitating clear communication and ensuring alignment with company vision and values.

The position will entail overseeing and executing key responsibilities, including but not limited to managing projects, coordinating team efforts, and ensuring adherence to company policies and deadlines. Additionally, the role will require regular collaboration with cross-functional departments to drive operational efficiency and achieve strategic objectives. Proficiency in relevant software tools, strong analytical skills, and the ability to adapt to dynamic work environments are essential qualifications for this role. Supporting the development and implementation of governance frameworks, Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (EPIC) protocols, benefit-sharing mechanisms, and institutional transition strategies forms a key component of this role.

As the role involves spearheading stakeholder engagement, you will collaborate with communities, government entities, donors, technical partners, and conservation stakeholders to foster meaningful relationships and drive collective impact.

Responsibilities include administering financial oversight, implementing risk management protocols, establishing grievance redress systems, and ensuring robust project accountability mechanisms.

Facilitating coordination among carbon finance initiatives, rangeland restoration projects, biodiversity conservation efforts, and community livelihood goals ensures a cohesive and strategic approach to sustainable development.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

A Master’s degree or higher in environmental management, climate change, natural resource management, governance, law, economics, business administration, sustainable development, social sciences, or a related discipline is required.

With a minimum of a decade of progressively responsible senior leadership roles, candidates must possess extensive experience in conservation, climate finance, community development, natural resource management, or the oversight of large-scale programs.

With a proven track record in overseeing intricate multi-stakeholder initiatives, you have successfully coordinated engagements across diverse groups, including communities, governmental bodies, funding organizations, technical collaborators, and private sector representatives.

Applicants with prior involvement in carbon initiatives, measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) processes, adherence to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (EPIC), safeguard protocols, benefit-sharing frameworks, or climate financing will be highly regarded.

Bringing extensive experience collaborating with community institutions, conservancy governance frameworks, customary leadership bodies, and local or national government entities in northern Kenya.

Key qualifications include advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to think strategically to drive business growth. Proficiency in data-driven decision-making and a keen attention to detail are required to ensure accuracy in all tasks. Strong communication skills are necessary for collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
