JOB PURPOSE

This role is responsible for spearheading the design, coordination, and execution of Amnesty International’s regional advocacy and lobbying initiatives across Africa, ensuring the organization’s human rights research, policy positions, global campaigns, and recommendations are effectively championed at African Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs), African Union (AU) member states, and other key regional stakeholders. Under the direct oversight and guidance of the designated [Manager within the Research and Advocacy Program], the position will provide high-level strategic leadership to advance Amnesty International’s advocacy objectives in the region.

The position is available in either Nairobi or Dakar, with compensation determined by the assigned location.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Spearhead the development, execution, and assessment of regional advocacy strategies across Africa, maximizing engagement with advocacy prospects at African Union (AU) organs, bodies, and institutions, as well as Regional Economic Communities (RCS), while ensuring thorough follow-up and evaluation of these strategies.

Oversee regional advocacy initiatives across Africa, guaranteeing that operational strategies and key priorities are executed punctually and within allocated financial constraints.

Monitor, assess, and provide strategic guidance on evolving developments and potential advocacy initiatives within the African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities (RCS), with a focused emphasis on the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Regional Human Rights System—including the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACH PR), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Anchor), and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

Collaborate effectively with researchers and campaigners in African regional offices to embed impactful advocacy messaging and strategies within research initiatives and campaign projects and deliverables.

Experienced professionals will oversee and facilitate Amnesty International’s engagement in ACH PR sessions and additional pertinent regional forums.

Facilitate coordination between regional and international advocacy efforts, while assisting in the execution of cohesive strategies across both spheres.

Develop and sustain consistent engagement and productive collaborations with key stakeholders across the African Union and other pertinent African intergovernmental organizations and institutions.

Collaborate effectively with diverse civil society organizations and activists at local, national, regional, and international levels, fostering both formal alliances and informal coalitions.

A candidate for this role must demonstrate proficiency in relevant technical and soft skills, along with a minimum of three years of hands-on experience in the field. The ideal applicant will possess strong problem-solving abilities, exceptional communication skills, and the capacity to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams. Familiarity with industry-specific tools and methodologies is essential, as is the ability to adapt to evolving project demands and technological advancements. Responsibilities include analyzing complex data sets, developing strategic solutions, and ensuring alignment with organizational objectives. Prior experience in project leadership or mentorship roles is highly advantageous.

Seasoned professionals should possess significant expertise in advocacy and engagement with pivotal intergovernmental bodies across Africa, particularly the African Union, the African Peace and Security Architecture, and regional human rights treaty institutions.

Seasoned professionals with a proven track record in crafting analytical reports, policy briefs, position papers, submissions, and various advocacy-related deliverables are sought.

Demonstrates a deep expertise in international law, global affairs, and the frameworks governing human rights and humanitarian law across borders.

Demonstrated skill in recognizing, assessing, and leveraging openings to engage with IGOs and authorities on matters concerning human rights.
