Job Objective/Purpose

Oversee a range of critical duties that include, but are not limited to, managing project timelines, coordinating team efforts, and ensuring adherence to company policies and industry standards. You will be responsible for analyzing performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing strategic solutions to enhance operational efficiency. Additionally, you will lead cross-functional initiatives, facilitate communication between departments, and provide guidance to junior team members to foster professional growth. This role demands a strong ability to multitask, prioritize effectively, and maintain meticulous attention to detail while delivering consistent results in a fast-paced environment.

Daily verification of available equipment inventory is conducted, with diligent assessment of operational status to confirm functionality. Any identified malfunctions must be promptly reported to the Bio-Medical Technician or Unit Manager for further action.

Deliver consistent financial viability and sustainable expansion for the unit by implementing strategic initiatives that strengthen revenue streams and optimize cost efficiency.

Ensure attainment of financial objectives by meticulously controlling costs within the allocated budget and facilitating timely and precise billing for drugs and services. Maintain an invoice rejection rate below 3% by verifying that all necessary pre-authorizations and documentation are completed accurately.

Verify compliance with Avenue’s corporate governance policies to maintain regulatory alignment and organizational integrity.

Vigilantly monitor for, identify, and document any instances of fraudulent behavior or criminal conduct to ensure compliance and safeguard organizational integrity.

Collaborate with the Nurse in Charge to ensure full adoption of internal audit recommendations, thereby achieving favorable outcomes in future audits.

You must thoroughly familiarize yourself with all systems, policies, and procedures detailed in the Hospital Manual, with particular emphasis on those governing the delivery of medical services—including admission and discharge protocols, nursing documentation standards, ward equipment and supply management, as well as emergency response guidelines.

Utilize the designated tools to log every sentinel incident or event, ensuring documentation is completed and submitted within a 24-hour timeframe.

Maintain strict adherence to infection control protocols outlined in the hospital’s official manual, ensuring compliance with all specified infection control bundles, including SSI, VAP, CACTI, and CLA BSI, as applicable.

Oversee patient attendants in accordance with their designated roles and responsibilities.

Engage proactively in ward rounds and obtain comprehensive handover reports from the outgoing nurse at the conclusion of each shift.

Evaluate the patient’s goals of care in consultation with the next of kin.

Responsibilities include maintaining meticulous records of patients’ valuables and ensuring their secure storage at all times.

Properly documenting patient notes and conducting thorough reviews are essential responsibilities, along with collaborating with fellow clinicians and consultants as necessary.

Please confirm that all diagnostic requests, including those for laboratory and radiology services, contain the patient’s pertinent clinical information.

Maintain patient safety by rigorously adhering to the six International Patient Safety Goals (Ipsus), which include verifying patient identification, fostering clear and effective communication, safeguarding the use of high-alert medications, ensuring proper site preparation and surgical procedures, minimizing the risk of healthcare-associated infections, and preventing patient harm from falls.

Educate patients and their families about important health-related topics to enhance their understanding and promote informed decision-making.

The nursing care plan must prioritize patient needs in a systematic and documented manner.

Maintain the emergency trolley in optimal condition for efficient resuscitation procedures by ensuring all drugs and supplies are fully stocked and readily accessible. Remove and promptly report any damaged equipment to prevent delays during critical situations. Additionally, keep and update the associated checklist bi-monthly, specifically on the 1st and 16th of each month, as well as whenever necessary to ensure ongoing readiness.

Ensure healthcare providers, including doctors and consultants, are promptly informed of any updates regarding patient progress or critical test results as soon as they become accessible.

Execute all invasive nursing procedures utilizing aseptic technique to maintain strict infection control standards and patient safety.

Daily, input unit-specific data accurately and without delay to ensure timely information processing.

Ensure all relevant consultants have thoroughly explained procedures and secured appropriate consent from participants.

Before any procedures are conducted, ensure all official checklists for patients are completed, including those for theater, radiology, and renal services.

Maintain strict adherence to patient privacy and confidentiality protocols in accordance with established policies at all times.

Administering medications as prescribed, ensuring accurate dosage, and monitoring patients for adverse reactions or therapeutic effects.

Ensure strict compliance with the ten fundamental principles of medication administration, including verifying the correct patient, medication, dosage, route, and timing, while maintaining accurate documentation, providing client education, conducting thorough assessments, performing evaluations, and respecting the client’s right to refuse treatment.

All newly prescribed medications must be forwarded to the pharmacy without delay, with STAT doses administered within thirty minutes of receipt.

Ensure the secure storage of D.D.A. medications and maintain accurate drug registers in accordance with unit-specific protocols and regulatory standards.

Immediately process and issue refunds for any unused medications to ensure timely reimbursement.

All verbal prescriptions must be countersigned by the treating physician within 24 hours in accordance with hospital protocol.

Demonstrates adherence to the professional standards of patient care and treatment as outlined by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

Ensuring client satisfaction for patients, consultants, and other stakeholders involves maintaining exceptional care standards, fostering clear and proactive communication, and delivering timely feedback. Any unresolved concerns must be promptly escalated to the Unit Manager, followed by consistent demonstration of corrective actions and measurable improvements.

Perform any additional responsibilities as directed by your direct supervisor, consistent with the parameters of this position, or as otherwise required.

Person Specification

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Diploma in Nursing is required for this position.

A Higher Diploma in Neonatal or Pediatric Critical Care Nursing (NICU/PICK) is an essential qualification for this role.

A current and valid license from the Nursing Council of Kenya is required.

Holding current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLAS) certifications is required.

Requires a minimum of two years of hands-on experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICK) setting.

Proven ability to build strong interpersonal relationships and convey information clearly, coupled with meticulous attention to detail. Demonstrated capacity to drive results and deliver consistent, dependable performance in all responsibilities.
