The ARABLE – Promoting Sustainable Agriculture and Blue Economy in Kenya initiative is a 36-month project being implemented across four sub-counties—Galle, Tana Delta, Msambweni, and Lunga—situated within the Kale and Tana River counties. Led by Action Against Hunger (ACF) in partnership with the European Committee for Training and Agriculture (CEA), WARP, and the Polytechnic di Milano, the project is executed by a consortium of organizations with deep expertise in resilient agricultural systems and blue economy strategies. Collaboration with Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Health further strengthens institutional sustainability and ensures lasting, impactful outcomes.
The initiative is dedicated to enhancing food security, boosting incomes, and strengthening resilience against food crises by employing an integrated, climate-smart, and gender-responsive strategy. Its objective is to address challenges including low agricultural productivity, excessive post-harvest losses, and restricted economic engagement of women by equipping farmers and fishermen with essential tools, technologies, and expertise. This support empowers them to diversify their livelihoods, raise their earnings, and safeguard natural ecosystems.
To accomplish these objectives, the initiative outlines a series of strategic initiatives spanning three primary focus areas:
By facilitating greater access to essential products and services, we empower small-scale farmers and artisanal fishermen to adopt climate-resilient production and fishing methods, as well as sustainable community practices, thereby safeguarding ecosystems from degradation.
By expanding opportunities for rural and coastal families—including farmers and fishermen—to access technical expertise, financial resources, infrastructure, and specialized knowledge, this initiative aims to enhance the sustainable management of supply chains, thereby adding value to their food production and fostering greater income growth and diversification.
Dedicated to raising awareness within communities about essential nutritional requirements, particularly for at-risk populations like women and children, to foster increased access to and utilization of a wide range of nutritious foods.
