The primary responsibility of this role involves distributing pharmaceuticals to patients, ensuring the availability of necessary medications, maintaining precise dispensing practices, and processing accurate billing in strict adherence to established protocols and the hospital’s overarching patient care objectives.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Deliver superior pharmacy services to patients in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals across designated departments.

Verify prescriptions for correctness and appropriateness, then consult with prescribing physicians to address any discrepancies, thereby promoting the safe, cost-effective, and rational utilization of medications and other pharmaceutical products.

Monitor patient reactions to therapeutic interventions, analyze potential drug and disease interactions, and evaluate medications prescribed for designated purposes.

Document any adverse drug reactions reported by patients following their medication administration.

Perform systematic clinical reviews of all treatment sheets and prescriptions to verify the appropriateness of treatments, assess potential drug interactions, confirm dosing precision, and guarantee that all prescribed doses are administered as specified.

Engage collaboratively in the end-to-end management of pharmaceutical inventory, encompassing the initiation of stock requisitions, receipt and expedited placement of incoming orders from central storage facilities, systematic stock audits—including daily, random, and quarterly assessments—and thorough reconciliation of stock variances.

Handle all pharmaceutical-related matters that require resolution, including drug pricing oversight, patient credit follow-ups, and the replacement of damaged or expired inventory.

Review pharmaceutical stock to verify expiry dates, promptly identifying medications approaching their shelf life limit, and arrange for their return to inventory in strict adherence to the Short Expiry Drug Policy guidelines.

Ensure that extemporaneous preparations for both inpatients and outpatients, as well as ward solutions, are accurately prepared and labeled according to established protocols.

Collaborate in the development and execution of hospital policies governing drug utilization as well as pharmacy standard operating procedures.

Engage in ward pharmacy services in accordance with hospital policy.

Handle chemotherapy dispensing and reconstitution meticulously in full compliance with the established cytotoxic handling policy.

Deliver patient education through one-on-one consultations and distribute informational brochures, guaranteeing that in-patients and out-patients receive these resources whenever they are needed.

Maintain ongoing communication with the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, the Ministry of Health, and other relevant professional organizations to ensure the department remains informed of all advancements and updates in the pharmaceutical sector.

Provide on-the-job training and coaching for newly hired staff and pharmacy technicians to ensure they develop the necessary skills and competencies for their roles.

The position may include additional duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time.

Seeking a candidate with a bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field, coupled with at least three years of hands-on experience in a comparable role.
