This role is responsible for spearheading the design, coordination, and execution of Amnesty International’s regional advocacy and lobbying initiatives across Africa, ensuring that the organization’s human rights research, advocacy stances, global campaigns, and policy recommendations are effectively advanced within African Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs), African Union (AU) member states, and other key regional stakeholders. The position will deliver this strategic advocacy leadership while operating under the direct supervision and guidance of the designated Manager within the Research and Advocacy Program.
The position is based in either Nairobi or Dakar, with compensation determined by the specific assignment location.

Spearhead the development, execution, and assessment of regional advocacy strategies across Africa, maximizing engagement opportunities with African Union (AU) organs, bodies, and institutions, as well as Regional Economic Communities (RCS). Lead the continuous monitoring and evaluation of these strategies to ensure their effectiveness and impact.
Oversee regional advocacy initiatives in Africa, guaranteeing timely execution and adherence to budgetary constraints for operational plans and strategic priorities.
Monitor and evaluate developments, trends, and advocacy prospects within the African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities (RCS), with a specific focus on the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Regional Human Rights System—including the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACH PR), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Anchor), and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. Provide informed counsel, conduct in-depth research, and prepare comprehensive reports based on these observations.
Collaborate closely with researchers and campaigners in African regional offices to ensure advocacy messaging and strategies are effectively incorporated into research and campaigning projects and outputs.
Spearhead Amnesty International’s representation and engagement at ACH PR sessions and other pertinent regional forums, ensuring cohesive coordination and strategic execution of all associated activities.
Facilitate cohesion between regional and global advocacy plans while playing a key role in executing unified strategies across diverse geographical and organizational contexts.
Develop and sustain ongoing communications and productive collaborations with pertinent stakeholders in the African Union and other relevant African intergovernmental organizations and institutions.
Collaborate effectively with a diverse array of domestic, national, regional, and global civil society organizations and activists via structured alliances and informal networks.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Professionals should possess a strong background in advocacy and stakeholder engagement with prominent intergovernmental entities across Africa, with particular emphasis on the African Union, the African Peace and Security Architecture, and regional human rights treaty bodies.
Experience encompasses the creation of in-depth analyses, policy briefs, position papers, submissions, and other pertinent advocacy materials.
Demonstrates deep expertise in international law, international relations, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law, with a comprehensive understanding of their principles and applications.
Skilled in recognizing, evaluating, and leveraging chances to engage with IGOs and authorities to advocate for human rights concerns.
Demonstrated expertise in conducting research to support advocacy initiatives, with a focus on fieldwork related to human rights concerns, is required.
Fluent proficiency in both spoken and written English (mandatory) and French (mandatory) is required.
