The overall purpose of this post is to lead on the development, coordination and implementation of Amnesty International’s regional advocacy and lobbying activities in Africa so that Amnesty International’s human rights research, advocacy positions, global campaigns and recommendations are effectively promoted at African Intergovernmental Organisations (IGOs), African Union (AU) member states and other relevant actors in the region. Oversee the development, execution, and assessment of regional advocacy strategies in Africa, maximizing engagement opportunities across African Union (AU) organs, bodies, and institutions, as well as Regional Economic Communities (RCS), while ensuring rigorous evaluation of these initiatives.
Oversee regional advocacy project initiatives in Africa, ensuring timely and budget-conscious delivery of operational plans and priorities.
Monitor, assess, and provide strategic guidance on emerging developments and advocacy prospects within the African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities (RCS), with special emphasis on the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) as well as the African Regional Human Rights System—encompassing the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACH PR), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Anchor), and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
Collaborate seamlessly with researchers and campaigners in African regional offices to embed impactful advocacy messaging and strategic approaches within research initiatives and campaign deliverables.
Spearhead Amnesty International’s engagement and representation at ACH PR sessions and additional pertinent regional forums, overseeing all related initiatives and operations.
Enhance the synergy between regional and international advocacy approaches while supporting the execution of cohesive strategies across both spheres.
Develop and sustain consistent communication and productive working ties with key stakeholders across the African Union and other African intergovernmental organizations and institutions.
Collaborate effectively with diverse civil society organizations and activists across local, national, regional, and international levels, fostering both formal partnerships and informal coalitions to advance shared objectives.
We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in project management, including proficiency in methodologies such as Agile or Scrum, along with exceptional organizational and communication skills. The ideal applicant should possess at least five years of relevant experience in a leadership role, demonstrating a proven ability to drive project success while managing cross-functional teams. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Jira, Trello, or Asana is required, as is a track record of delivering projects on time and within budget. A degree in business administration, computer science, or a related field is preferred, though equivalent professional experience may be considered.
