The primary objective of this position is to oversee and drive key initiatives aligned with the organization’s strategic goals, ensuring operational excellence and sustainable growth. The Research Assistant will offer technical and logistical assistance to research initiatives within the Behavioral Chemical Ecology Unit. Primary duties involve cultivating and sustaining fly colonies, preparing experimental supplies, and executing behavioral and chemical assays. Additionally, the assistant will manage data acquisition, processing, and storage, while maintaining laboratory equipment in optimal condition. This role is pivotal to the seamless implementation of experiments and will play an integral part in advancing the project’s research goals.

Conducts a range of specialized tasks, including maintaining accurate records, processing documentation, and performing routine inspections to ensure compliance with established protocols. Responsibilities involve coordinating with team members to streamline workflows, resolving discrepancies, and adhering to strict deadlines. Additionally, the role demands proficiency in relevant software, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize multiple assignments effectively. Candidates must possess strong organizational skills, effective communication abilities, and a commitment to upholding quality standards in all operational activities.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for fulfilling the following duties:

Maintain and rear fly colonies under controlled laboratory conditions by preparing specialized diets for both larval and adult stages, ensuring consistent monitoring of colony health, productivity, and environmental parameters.

Prepare materials meticulously, configure and calibrate scientific instruments, and perform both behavioral and chemical assays to ensure accurate and reliable experimental outcomes.

Accurately document observations, conduct rigorous data entry with quality assurance measures, and support the compilation of datasets for analytical review.

Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment and workspaces, ensuring all tools are properly maintained and free from contamination. Organize and label chemicals and samples with precision to maintain accurate records and facilitate easy identification. Promptly report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance requirements to ensure uninterrupted operations and adherence to safety protocols.

Adhere to established safety and ethical protocols while meticulously documenting compliance activities; actively engage in scheduled safety inspections and mandatory training sessions to ensure adherence to regulatory standards.

Collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator and students, offering essential logistical support for events while assisting in maintaining the seamless daily functioning of the research unit.

Requirements/ qualifications

Earn a recognized university diploma in Biological Sciences or an equivalent discipline.

A minimum of one year of hands-on experience in a biology or laboratory environment is required.

Proficiency in insect cultivation techniques and laboratory methodologies is required.

Proficiency in laboratory safety protocols, biosafety measures, and proper chemical handling procedures is required.

Possesses strong capabilities in accurately recording, entering, and conducting preliminary analysis of data.

Demonstrated proficiency in maintaining laboratory equipment and preparing experimental materials is essential.
