The Research Assistant will offer specialized technical and logistical assistance to research initiatives within the Behavioural Chemical Ecology Unit. Core duties involve cultivating and sustaining fly colonies, preparing experimental apparatus and reagents, and executing behavioural and chemical assays. Additional responsibilities include gathering, analyzing, and systematizing data, as well as maintaining laboratory equipment in optimal working condition. Serving as a pivotal role, the incumbent will facilitate the seamless progression of experiments and play a direct role in advancing the project’s research goals.

Oversee a range of critical responsibilities, including the management of daily operations, ensuring adherence to company policies and industry regulations, and maintaining high standards of efficiency and productivity across all assigned tasks. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to align objectives with organizational goals, identify process improvements, and implement strategic initiatives that enhance performance. Additionally, monitor key performance indicators to assess progress, address any deviations promptly, and provide actionable insights to senior leadership to support data-driven decision-making.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for fulfilling the following duties and responsibilities while meeting the outlined requirements.

Maintain and propagate fly colonies under controlled laboratory conditions by preparing and providing specialized diets for both larval and adult stages, while simultaneously assessing colony health, productivity, and environmental parameters to ensure optimal breeding and experimental conditions.

Prepare materials, configure experimental setups, calibrate scientific equipment, and perform behavioral and chemical assays.

Accurately document observations, conduct meticulous data entry with rigorous quality control measures, and support the compilation and preparation of datasets for analytical purposes.

Laboratory equipment and workspaces must be cleaned and sterilized meticulously, while chemicals and samples should be stored and labeled with precision. Additionally, any equipment malfunctions or maintenance requirements must be promptly reported ensuring optimal functionality and safety.

Adhere to safety protocols and ethical standards, ensure compliance documentation is up-to-date, and actively participate in safety assessments and training programs.

Work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator and student team to deliver comprehensive logistical support for all events while maintaining the seamless day-to-day functioning of the research unit.

Seeking a highly skilled professional to fill a critical role, the ideal candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field, coupled with at least three years of hands-on experience in the industry. Proficiency in specialized software or tools is mandatory, and familiarity with industry standards or regulations is strongly preferred. Strong analytical abilities and meticulous attention to detail are essential traits, along with the capacity to work effectively under tight deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required to collaborate with cross-functional teams and convey complex information clearly. The ability to adapt to evolving priorities and drive projects to completion is also imperative.

A recognized university must confer a diploma in Biological Sciences or an equivalent field.

A minimum of one year of hands-on experience within a biological or laboratory environment.

Proficiency in insect cultivation and standard laboratory methodologies is required.

Proficiency in laboratory safety protocols, biosafety measures, and proper chemical handling techniques is required.

Proficient in recording, entering, and conducting preliminary analysis of data.

Proficient in the upkeep of laboratory instruments and the preparation of experimental supplies.
