The first Steiner-Waldorf Kindergarten was established in 1998…

…in a modest house along Matadi Road on the outskirts of Nairobi, under the leadership of three German educators (Florian, Volvo, and Regard). The following year, the school relocated to Marathi, expanding its program to include first-grade primary education. Today, the Marathi Steiner School thrives as a well-established kindergarten and primary institution known as the Rudolf Steiner School, Marathi, successfully preparing its students for transition into Kenyan curriculum-based secondary schools.

In 1994, a new Waldorf Kindergarten opened in the scenic residential area of Kileleshwa, initiated by a group of parents who admired the Marathi kindergarten but sought a more centrally located option.

As the new millennium approached, another group of parents—many from Kileleshwa—deeply familiar with the Waldorf philosophy and its tangible benefits, recognized the need to extend the initiative to primary education. At the time, both Kenyan and British school systems enforced rigidly formal instruction from an early age, fostering what experts termed “The Hurried Child” syndrome.

Reports of school unrest were widespread, and feedback from parents highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with the lack of creative and holistic educational approaches. Many children appeared stressed and discontent in traditional settings. This growing sentiment underscored a shared belief that Waldorf education would not only enrich the lives of participating families and their children but also drive meaningful improvements in Kenya’s educational landscape.
