The Role
Oxfam in Africa is looking for a highly skilled Head of Humanitarian to lead strategically and oversee humanitarian preparedness and response initiatives throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
As a pivotal member of Oxfam’s Senior Leadership Team, you will develop and implement the organization’s humanitarian strategy, guaranteeing that crisis responses are prompt, effective, and compliant with international benchmarks. Your role will involve leading a team of humanitarian advisors, spearheading regional preparedness initiatives, managing emergency interventions, and fostering collaboration among country offices, affiliates, and Oxfam’s Global Humanitarian Team. Additionally, you will contribute to humanitarian policy formulation, shape influential advocacy efforts, and champion the LHL agenda alongside Oxfam’s broader global commitments.
This pivotal position merges high-level strategic leadership, comprehensive operational management, and external engagement, positioning Oxfam as a premier humanitarian organization throughout the region.
This position operates under the supervision of the Programs and Influencing Director at Oxfam in Africa, while also adhering to matrix management principles as outlined by the Deputy Humanitarian Director of the Global Humanitarian Team.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for a seasoned humanitarian leader with a strategic mindset and a proven track record in managing intricate emergency responses across varied settings. Your expertise will encompass humanitarian preparedness, response coordination, and policy formulation, supported by a comprehensive grasp of gender considerations, protection principles, and globally recognized humanitarian norms.
You must demonstrate strong analytical and decisive decision-making abilities, capable of addressing complex challenges while leading high-performing teams and engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders such as governments, UN agencies, and partners. Proficiency in English and French is mandatory, along with the capacity to thrive in dynamic, high-pressure environments and undertake frequent, short-notice travel, which may include extended assignments.
