Our client, a globally recognized multinational consumer goods enterprise spanning various product categories, seeks to appoint a Legal Assistant to bolster their legal team in Hiya, Kenya.

JOB PURPOSE: The primary responsibility of this role involves performing specialized tasks and duties to support the organization’s objectives. Essential qualifications include a relevant degree or equivalent practical experience, along with a minimum of X years of professional experience in the field. Key responsibilities encompass managing projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations. The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and in a team environment. Proficiency in specific software, tools, or methodologies pertinent to the position is also required.

This position will facilitate the proactive and timely delivery of legal counsel to operational teams in Kenya while successfully implementing and executing the Legal Function’s strategy and objectives. The role will also assume responsibility for advising Kenyan entities on all legal matters related to commercial, operational, governance, and regulatory aspects of the business.

Responsible for overseeing and managing operational, professional, and business functions with a focus on efficiency and effectiveness. Play a key role in shaping and implementing the Legal department’s strategic objectives and operational plans.

Monitor and evaluate the legislative landscape in Kenya to ensure the business remains compliant with all applicable legal requirements.

Maintain an in-depth knowledge of regulatory matters and the governing framework shaping business operations, while overseeing the creation of strategic solutions that empower the organization to proactively address and navigate regulatory limitations.

Responsibilities include overseeing any legal proceedings initiated by or against the company as directed by the Head of Legal, Kenya, with accountability for developing and implementing effective case strategies.

Provide assistance to the Head of Legal, Kenya in overseeing entity management and ensuring adherence to robust corporate governance standards for the client’s entities operating within the country.

Engage in interdisciplinary business projects and initiatives, proactively identifying, evaluating, and addressing potential risks to mitigate legal exposure and uphold organizational objectives.

Prepare, negotiate, and examine contractual documentation while establishing and refining standardized formats to enhance operational efficiencies within the Legal sub-function.

Perform essential administrative functions within the department to guarantee resource availability, seamless information dissemination, and accurate record maintenance.

To enhance the control environment within the Legal department in alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives.

You will collaborate with various departments and team members to ensure seamless information flow, keeping all stakeholders apprised of progress and developments while facilitating joint problem-solving initiatives.

Dynamic leadership abilities, including the capacity to motivate and guide teams toward achieving organizational goals, are essential. Strong interpersonal skills are required to foster collaboration and communication among team members. Experience in managing diverse groups or projects is a necessity. The ability to inspire confidence and drive performance through clear direction and support is critical. Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Required:

Candidates must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. A minimum of five years of progressive experience in a similar role is required, with at least two years in a leadership or supervisory position. Proficiency in industry-specific software and tools is essential, along with strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of successfully managing projects, meeting deadlines, and collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.

Holding a respected legal qualification from a well-regarded academic institution, along with demonstrated proficiency in delivering legal counsel to internal stakeholders.

With a minimum of three to four years of post-qualification legal experience, the ideal candidate will bring a solid foundation of practical expertise to the role.

Professional candidates with two to three years of active involvement in high-pressure legal environments are preferred.

Extensive background in overseeing legal proceedings and managing case workflows is essential.

Professional experience in corporate secretarial functions and board-related activities (CPSK) is highly advantageous.

Proficient in local substantive and procedural laws pertaining to key operational areas, including Commercial Law, labor regulations, land legislation, factory and manufacturing compliance, and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) standards.

Skilled in negotiation, as well as written and verbal communication, are essential.

Proven capability to leverage strategic insight, analytical rigor, and sound judgment in decision-making processes.

Demonstrates strong independent judgment, effectively guides team members, and collaborates seamlessly with colleagues and senior leadership.
