A distinguished multinational consumer goods company is seeking a Legal Assistant to enhance its legal team in This, Kenya.

JOB PURPOSE:

This position is designed to deliver timely and proactive legal counsel to operational teams in Kenya, while also effectively implementing the Legal Function’s strategy and objectives. The role will involve providing comprehensive legal guidance to entities in Kenya on matters related to commercial operations, governance, regulatory compliance, and business procedures.

In this capacity, you will play an integral part in executing critical tasks, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring adherence to established standards and objectives. Your duties will encompass a broad spectrum of activities, from strategic planning and project execution to meticulous attention to detail in day-to-day operations. Play a key role in shaping and implementing the Legal department’s strategic initiatives to drive organizational objectives forward.

Monitor and assess the legislative landscape in Kenya to ensure the business remains fully informed of its legal obligations and stays compliant with all applicable laws.

To ensure full compliance with applicable regulations, closely monitor the evolving regulatory landscape and its impact on business operations. Proactively develop strategic solutions that address regulatory challenges, enabling the organization to adapt efficiently to changing requirements while mitigating potential risks.

Oversight of all litigation matters initiated by or directed at the business, as assigned by the Head of Legal, Kenya, including the development and implementation of case strategies.

Provide assistance to the Head of Legal, Kenya in the oversight of entity management and the enforcement of effective corporate governance practices across the client’s entities within the region.

Engage in collaborative cross-functional business projects and initiatives, evaluating and monitoring potential threats to proactively mitigate legal risks while supporting the attainment of organizational objectives.

Prepare, negotiate, and assess contractual documentation while designing standardized formats to enhance operational efficiencies within the Legal sub-function.

Perform essential administrative functions within the department to maintain resource availability, ensure the seamless exchange of information, and keep records current.

Develop and enhance the Legal department’s control environment to align with the organization’s strategic objectives.

Demonstrates proficiency in cross-functional and intra-departmental communication to ensure all stakeholders remain apprised of developments while collaboratively resolving shared challenges.

Capable of demonstrated leadership, with a proven track record of guiding teams toward achieving organizational objectives through strategic direction and motivational support. Exhibits strong decision-making skills, adept at resolving challenges and fostering collaboration across diverse groups. Proven ability to inspire and mentor team members, driving performance and cultivating a positive, high-energy work environment.

Facilitate the execution and realization of the Legal sub-function’s strategic plans and objectives, ensuring full alignment with the overarching business strategy.

Seeking candidates with a strong academic foundation, relevant professional experience, and a diverse skill set. Applicants must meet specific educational criteria, possess a minimum number of years in the field, and demonstrate proficiency in key competencies essential for success in this role. Ideal candidates will exhibit a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills, ensuring they can contribute meaningfully to the organization’s objectives.

Obtained a respected legal degree from an esteemed academic institution and demonstrated proficiency in delivering legal counsel to internal stakeholders.

At minimum, candidates should possess three to four years of post-qualification legal experience.

Candidates with a minimum of two to three years of professional experience in high-pressure legal environments are preferred.

With a proven track record in overseeing legal disputes and court proceedings, candidates should possess hands-on experience in managing litigation processes from initiation to resolution. This includes coordinating with legal teams, drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, and ensuring compliance with procedural requirements. Familiarity with case management software and an ability to analyze legal risks and strategies are also essential for success in this role.

Ideal candidates will possess prior exposure to corporate secretarial functions and governance-related responsibilities, particularly in the context of board proceedings.

Thorough understanding of pertinent local substantive and procedural laws within key areas of responsibility, including Commercial Law, labor regulations, real estate legislation, manufacturing and factory compliance standards, and environmental, health, and safety (EHS) requirements.

Exceptional proficiency in negotiation, as well as written and verbal communication, is essential.

Demonstrates exceptional strategic thinking, analytical prowess, and sound judgment in all responsibilities.

Demonstrates strong independent decision-making skills, effectively guides teams, and collaborates seamlessly with colleagues and senior leadership.
