Oxfam in Africa is in search of a distinguished Head of Humanitarian to deliver strategic leadership and oversee humanitarian preparedness and response initiatives throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
As a vital contributor to the Senior Leadership Team, you will be responsible for developing and steering Oxfam’s humanitarian strategy, guaranteeing that crisis responses are executed promptly, effectively, and in accordance with international benchmarks. You will lead a group of humanitarian advisors, spearhead regional preparedness initiatives, supervise emergency interventions, and foster cohesive partnerships among country offices, affiliates, and Oxfam’s Global Humanitarian Team. Additionally, you will play a key role in shaping humanitarian policy, driving advocacy efforts, and advancing the Localization of Humanitarian Leadership (LHL) agenda alongside Oxfam’s broader global commitments.
This position holds significant influence, merging strategic leadership, operational management, and external engagement to uphold Oxfam’s prominence as a key humanitarian organization across the continent.
This position operates under the oversight of the Programs and Influencing Director for Oxfam in Africa, while also adhering to the matrix management structure led by the Deputy Humanitarian Director of the Global Humanitarian Team (GHT).

A highly strategic and seasoned humanitarian leader is required, with a demonstrated track record in overseeing intricate emergency response operations across varied environments. Your expertise will encompass robust capabilities in humanitarian preparedness, response coordination, and policy formulation, alongside a comprehensive grasp of gender considerations, protection frameworks, and globally accepted humanitarian norms.
You must demonstrate strong analytical and decisive thinking, with the capacity to manage complexity, guide high-performing teams, and engage with diverse stakeholders such as governments, UN agencies, and partners. Fluency in both English and French is mandatory, alongside the ability to thrive in dynamic, high-pressure settings and accommodate frequent, short-notice travel, including extended assignments.
