JOB PURPOSE
This role is responsible for spearheading the strategic design, coordination, and execution of Amnesty International’s regional advocacy and lobbying efforts across Africa, ensuring the organization’s human rights research, policy positions, global campaigns, and recommendations are effectively championed within African Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs), African Union (AU) member states, and other key regional stakeholders. The position will deliver high-level advocacy leadership, reporting directly to the designated Manager within the Research and Advocacy Program.
The position is based in either Nairobi or Dakar, with compensation contingent upon the specific location.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for spearheading the development, execution, and assessment of regional advocacy strategies across Africa, maximizing engagement opportunities with the African Union (AU) organs, bodies, and institutions, as well as Regional Economic Communities (RCS).
Oversee regional advocacy initiatives in Africa, guaranteeing the timely execution and adherence to budgetary constraints of operational plans and key priorities.
The role involves tracking, evaluating, and providing strategic insights on emerging developments and advocacy prospects within the African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities (RCS), with a strong emphasis on the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) as well as the African Regional Human Rights System—including the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACH PR), the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Anchor), and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
Collaborate extensively with researchers and campaigners in African regional offices to embed robust advocacy messaging and strategies within research initiatives and campaign deliverables.
Spearhead Amnesty International’s involvement and engagement in ACH PR sessions and other pertinent regional forums, ensuring cohesive coordination and leadership throughout all activities.
Drive cohesive alignment between regional and global advocacy approaches while playing a key role in executing integrated strategies across both regional and international frameworks.
Develop and sustain consistent communication and productive collaborations with key stakeholders across the African Union (AU) and other pertinent African intergovernmental organizations and institutions.
Collaborate effectively with a diverse network of civil society organizations and activists spanning local, national, regional, and international levels, fostering both formal alliances and informal coalitions.

Accomplished in crafting well-researched analysis, policy briefs, position papers, submissions, and other advocacy-related documents to drive strategic initiatives and influence decision-making processes.
Profound expertise in international law and relations, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law is essential.
Proficiency in recognizing, assessing, and leveraging openings to engage with international governmental organizations (IGOs) and relevant authorities on matters pertaining to human rights.
