Conduct or collaborate on the evaluation of E&S documentation to assess potential risks associated with new investments and advisory engagements within the Financial Intermediary sector, encompassing Banks, Funds, NBF Is, and Micro Finance Institutions.

In the role of Financial Intermediary, you will deliver Environmental and Social (E&S) oversight for IFC investments across the entire project lifecycle, encompassing initial review, appraisal, public disclosure, board review and approval, commitment and disbursement, and ongoing project supervision.

Prepare and submit comprehensive project-related documents, both internal and external, to facilitate IFC investment activities.

Lead or participate in creating and implementing environmental and social (E&S) risk mitigation strategies and value-added solutions to assist clients in effectively managing their E&S risks.

Offer expert direction to IFC investment teams on Environmental and Social (E&S) risk management to enhance investment processing and inform strategic decisions throughout each phase of the investment cycle.

Assist financial institution (FI) clients in establishing and executing their Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESSS) while enhancing their operational capabilities.

When overseeing E&S assessments, offer direction and assistance to team members, optimizing the allocation of staff, consultants, and resources to guarantee the punctual completion of deliverables.

Engage collaboratively with the investment team to develop and refine Environmental and Social (E&S) provisions in legal agreements, ensuring alignment with best practices and regulatory requirements.

Consistently oversee portfolio clients to ensure adherence to the established Environmental and Social (E&S) compliance criteria of an investment.

Document and convey any discrepancies between client performance and IFC E&S requirements to both the client and IFC management in a precise and transparent manner.

Assist industry teams and clients in addressing inquiries from the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAN) investigations and Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) requests.

Participate, as required, in cross-regional and global teams tasked with developing policy interpretation notes on environmental and social (E&S) topics, and support the corporate knowledge base by evaluating and sharing key insights and lessons derived from project work.

Develop concise management briefs summarizing pertinent environmental and social (E&S) issues.

Assist in the preparation of regional portfolio reviews and the compilation of periodic reports.

Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

Selection Criteria

A Master’s degree in environmental science, sociology, engineering, or a closely related field is required.

Seeking a professional with at least five years of hands-on experience in Environmental & Social (E&S) management, monitoring, or due diligence, ideally within financial institutions—with a preference for work in the Africa region.

Professionals must possess hands-on experience in providing advisory or operational support to commercial banks, private equity funds, insurance companies, or other entities within the financial sector, with a specific focus on embedding Environmental and Social (E&S) risk management frameworks and meeting Development Financial Institution (DFI) requirements.

Proficiency in utilizing IFC’s sustainability framework, with a strong emphasis on the IFC Performance Standards, is required.

Proficient in articulating complex environmental and social topics clearly and succinctly, both verbally and in writing, ensuring accessibility to audiences without specialized expertise.

Demonstrates strong collaboration skills to thrive in diverse, cross-functional teams, fostering productive dialogue and aligning perspectives through persuasive negotiation and active engagement.

Seeking candidates with practical exposure to emerging markets, preferably in settings characterized by fragility or ongoing conflict.

Frequent travel is a requirement of this position, necessitating regular trips to various locations.

Demonstrated capacity to prioritize and execute multiple responsibilities efficiently while adhering to stringent time constraints.

Experience with Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), Development Finance Institutions (Dais), or donor-funded initiatives is beneficial, particularly in understanding their operational policies, reporting obligations, and project implementation frameworks.

Fluency in English is a fundamental requirement, while proficiency in French is considered an additional asset.
