The University of EMB (Poem) was officially established as a Constituent College of the University of Nairobi through Legal Notice No. 65 issued on 17th June 2011 by His Excellency the President. Poem succeeded the former EMB Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College, which originated in 1947 as an agricultural training institution before being renamed the EMB Institute of Agriculture in 1968. In 1990, the institute was elevated to the status of EMB Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College, with a mandate to develop and deliver short-term management and technical courses while providing research and consultancy services aimed at enhancing agricultural sector performance.

This mandate remained in place until June 2011, when the college was formally converted into EMB University College through Legal Notice No. 65 dated 17th June 2011. The University College Council was subsequently inaugurated following its upgrade from EAST College by President MWA Kabuki. On 7th October 2016, EMB University College achieved a significant milestone by transitioning into a fully fledged university. The University of EMB was officially granted its Charter by His Excellency President Uluru Kenyatta during a ceremonial event held at State House, Nairobi.
