About British American Tobacco (BAT)

Founded in 1902, British American Tobacco (BAT) is a global leader in the tobacco industry, operating in more than 55 markets worldwide. With one billion adult smokers around the globe, BAT manufactures the cigarettes chosen by approximately one in eight of them.

At BAT, we take our business and our impact very seriously. We recognize that the tobacco industry is a controversial one, which is why it’s crucial for us to act responsibly, from sourcing tobacco leaf to marketing our products to adult consumers. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond just satisfying shareholders; we also prioritize the interests of our many stakeholders.

BAT operates at both a global and local level. We do not own tobacco farms or directly employ farmers. Instead, we support over 1,000 BAT leaf technicians worldwide who work with approximately 90,000 contracted farmers globally. In doing so, we contribute to the economies of many countries and are often the top employer in these regions.

In 2015, BAT sold over 663 billion cigarettes, produced in 44 factories across 41 countries. We employ more than 50,000 people worldwide, with countless others indirectly employed through our supply chain. Additionally, we contributed approximately £30 billion to governments worldwide in excise and other taxes that same year.

BAT is committed to operating responsibly and has been recognized for its efforts over the years. We were the first tobacco company to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in 2002, and we have maintained this recognition every year since. Our dedication to sustainability and responsibility will continue to guide our business as we strive for growth and success.
