Role Summary
The English Teacher will craft and deliver dynamic, inquiry-driven lessons to enhance students’ proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and critical analysis. This position requires designing and executing lessons aligned with IB standards, evaluating student progress through criterion-referenced assessments, and nurturing an enduring passion for language and literature. Additionally, the teacher will facilitate comprehensive student growth, encourage autonomous thought, and help cultivate a supportive, inclusive classroom culture.
The role may also include Head of Department responsibilities, offering leadership, overseeing curriculum development, and fostering ongoing enhancements in teaching and learning.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement rigorous English lessons that fully comply with the International Baccalaureate (IB) standards for both the Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP).
Enhance students’ proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and literary analysis through targeted instruction and practice.
Encourage the development of analytical reasoning, imaginative problem-solving, and a deep understanding of varied literary works and viewpoints.
Craft innovative, tailored learning opportunities that accommodate a wide range of student proficiency levels.
Employ student-centered and inquiry-based instructional methodologies to foster active learning and engagement in the classroom.
Develop and conduct both formative and summative assessments aligned with the International Baccalaureate (IB) criteria to evaluate student progress and achievement effectively.
Deliver prompt, actionable feedback while meticulously documenting student performance and advancement.
Facilitate student readiness by guiding them through internal and external evaluations, such as IB assessments.
Develop a classroom environment that prioritizes safety, inclusivity, and engagement for all students.
Serve as a Homeroom Tutor, providing comprehensive academic guidance and personal support to students.
Engage in co-curricular initiatives, including debate, drama, or writing clubs, to foster personal growth and skill development.
Proactively interact with parents via scheduled conferences and established communication platforms to foster collaborative relationships and ensure alignment on student progress and needs.
Partner with fellow educators in developing and executing curriculum plans and school-wide programs.
The requirements
A successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, alongside a minimum of five years of hands-on experience in a comparable role. Strong proficiency in industry-standard software and tools is essential, along with excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities. The ideal applicant will demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Prior leadership or project management experience is highly advantageous, as is a track record of delivering measurable results. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, are required to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
A recognized university must award a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a specialization in English, Literature, or a closely related field.
Professionals presently based in Kenya must hold a valid Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) registration.
Proven expertise in delivering instruction within diverse, multicultural, and international educational settings, combined with a deep grasp of student-centered, inquiry-driven teaching methodologies.
With a minimum of two to three years of instructional experience in the IB Middle Years Program and/or IB Diploma—or an equivalent curriculum—preferably within an international educational framework.
