About the Role
We seek proficient Swahili audio transcribers capable of transforming spoken audio into precise, polished written text. Your responsibilities will involve processing diverse audio materials—interviews, dialogues, podcasts, and field recordings—featuring a mix of standard Kiswahili alongside local vernacular and regional variations. This role offers an ideal opportunity for linguistics enthusiasts eager to engage with the dynamic, authentic expressions of Kiswahili as it unfolds in everyday interactions, marketplaces, and various cultural contexts.
What You’ll Do
Accurate transcription of Swahili audio recordings into written text is required.
Faithfully document slang, code-switching, and dialectal expressions with precision.
Flag any segments with unclear audio and include pertinent contextual notes as required.
Ensure adherence to our established style guide and maintain uniform formatting throughout all materials.
Produce fully edited transcripts in adherence to established deadlines.
What We’re Looking For
Proficient verbal and written fluency in Kiswahili, either as a native speaker or at an advanced level, is required.
Fluency in at least one of the following:
Nairobi Sheng, a hybrid language blending Swahili and English with Sheng slang, is widely spoken across urban Kenya, particularly in Nairobi. Proficiency in this language is highly valued in sectors such as media, customer service, and informal business, where it facilitates communication with diverse audiences. Job candidates who can speak Nairobi Sheng are preferred in roles requiring interaction with youth, corporate clients, or local communities, as it demonstrates cultural insight and adaptability. Additionally, candidates fluent in Nairobi Sheng often bring an advantage in marketing, content creation, and social engagement roles.
Proficiency in a Kenyan or Tanzanian tribal language is required, such as Kikuyu, Luo, Lucy, Samba, Valentin, Chara, Hayey, or others.
You possess an extraordinary ability to notice minute details that often evade others, demonstrating a keen eye for precision and accuracy.
Experienced in thriving under stringent time constraints while consistently delivering high-quality results.
A dependable internet connection and a dedicated workspace free from distractions are essential.
Proficient in operating headphones and transcription software with accuracy and efficiency.

With a background in transcription, translation, or subtitling, candidates will bring valuable experience to the role.
