Space for Giants is an international conservation nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding Africa’s vital wildlife landscapes—essential ecosystems that sustain the continent’s remaining elephant populations. These landscapes not only provide critical habitats for iconic species but also deliver profound benefits to humanity and nations, including biodiversity preservation, sustainable livelihoods, medicinal discoveries, carbon sequestration, and the very oxygen we rely on. Yet these vital ecosystems face severe threats: poachers exploit endangered wildlife for illegal trade in ivory, horns, scales, and pelts, while expanding agriculture encroaches upon natural habitats. As a result, human-wildlife conflict escalates, with farmers retaliating against crop-raiding animals.
Born from groundbreaking research in the early 2000s, Space for Giants has devoted nearly two decades to advancing human-wildlife coexistence across modernizing African landscapes. Through hands-on fieldwork, we examine the dynamic interplay between people and wildlife, tracking how their relationship evolves over time. Our work is rooted in the belief that for these landscapes and their wildlife to endure, they must deliver tangible, long-term value—transforming them into irreplaceable assets that communities and governments are compelled to protect. Recognizing the urgency of the crisis, we act swiftly to secure these ecosystems today, ensuring they are not lost before their true worth can be realized and preserved for future generations.
