The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The Industry and Economy Division of UNEP aims to empower policymakers in government, collaborate with industry leaders, and engage with the finance sector to leverage robust scientific evidence in crafting and implementing policies, strategies, practices, and technologies. These efforts foster sustainable consumption and production patterns, including circular economy principles, optimize natural resource utilization, ensure responsible chemical management, and align industrial and environmental policies for mutual reinforcement.
The Division fosters the creation and implementation of policies, technologies, economic tools, investment strategies, business innovations, and other initiatives designed to tackle pressing environmental issues—including climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and pollution—while simultaneously advancing economic and social progress.
This role will be based at the Nairobi duty station within the Industry and Economy Division of UNEP, specifically under the Materials and Systems Innovation Unit.
The Materials and Systems Innovation Unit is responsible for developing and executing UNEP’s work program, integrating data, scientific research, and knowledge-sharing networks focused on sustainable materials’ management, circular economy principles, and life cycle assessment. This initiative supports policymakers while fostering collaboration with industry and financial stakeholders to advance effective policy frameworks and practical solutions.
The successful candidate will deliver expert administrative, financial, and legal assistance to facilitate the compliant, efficient, and timely execution of project activities.
This position is designed to ensure institutional integrity by ensuring all contracts, budgets, travel logistics, and documentation comply with UN rules and regulations while enhancing operational support for project partners and stakeholders.
Must possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior management role within the financial services sector, demonstrating a proven track record in strategic planning, financial analysis, and team leadership. Additionally, the ideal candidate will exhibit strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to build and maintain high-performing teams. Proficiency in financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting is required, as is a deep understanding of regulatory compliance and risk management frameworks. A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field is essential, preferably complemented by an MBA or relevant professional certification such as CFA or CPA.
Education
A high school diploma or its equivalent is a mandatory qualification for this position.
A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, public administration, or an equivalent discipline is preferred.
With experience in the field, candidates should possess a proven track record of success in relevant roles, demonstrating proficiency in key responsibilities and meeting established requirements. A proven track record of at least five (5) years in a related capacity is required, encompassing expertise in the following areas:
Proficiency in an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is essential for this role.
The individual will be responsible for managing financial documents and overseeing contracts, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely processing. Duties include maintaining records, verifying financial data, and coordinating with relevant departments to uphold contractual obligations. Proficiency in financial software and attention to detail are essential, along with the ability to meet deadlines and adhere to regulatory guidelines.
Extensive experience in coordinating large-scale intergovernmental conferences is a prerequisite for this role.
Proficiency in financial matters is highly advantageous.
Prior experience working with the United Nations or international organizations is desirable
