"Vi Agroforestry: Empowering sustainable futures through agroforestry."
Established in 1983 by Sweden’s *Groningen Vi* (published by the Swedish Cooperative Union, KF), the initiative launched a fundraising effort to support tree planting in the Lake Victoria Region. This led to the creation of *Vi Planter Trad* (Vi Agroforestry), a non-profit organization dedicated to funding reforestation projects.
Operating as a foundation in Sweden and as non-governmental organizations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, Vi Agroforestry maintains headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, and a regional office in Nairobi, Kenya. Its work is non-political and non-religious.
Originally launched in Kenya’s West Point District in 1983, Vi Agroforestry’s initial focus was combating desertification and soil erosion through large-scale tree planting. As funding grew, the organization expanded its reach, establishing a project site in Trans Nova District in 1986, along with a new office in Kittle, Kenya. Further expansions followed: Masada, Uganda (1992); Musoma and Mwanza, Tanzania (1994 and 1999, respectively); Kisumu, Kenya (2002); Kigali, Rwanda (2004); and Kagera, Tanzania (2005). The Kagera office closed in 2014, leaving active country offices in Kittle (Kenya), Masada (Uganda), Kigali (Rwanda), and Musoma (Tanzania). A project office remains operational in Kisumu, Kenya.
In addition to its core programs, Vi Agroforestry engages in rural development initiatives in Malawi and serves as a strategic advisor in partnership with organizations such as We Effect.
