"Conserving Africa’s critical landscapes with local partners."
We collaborate with local communities, governments, and organizations to protect Africa’s vital ecosystems.
Africa’s unique landscapes and waters support unparalleled biodiversity and species richness, much of it co-existing alongside human populations. For rural Africans, the bond to their environment is deeply rooted—perhaps more than anywhere else—because their livelihoods depend on the health of these natural resources.
Key Challenges in Africa
Approximately 60% of Africa’s lands and waters—often held communally—are managed by the communities residing on them. These individuals are among the most marginalized globally, facing persistent threats due to limited control over the lands and waters essential for their survival.
As communities struggle, so does the wildlife that shares these resources. Weak institutional frameworks and governance further exacerbate these issues.
Thus, our efforts in Africa are centered on refining and scaling the most effective models of community-led conservation across the continent’s vast shared landscapes and waters. These models must deliver tangible benefits to people, as conservation only endures when it is economically and socially rewarding.
