Job Summary
The successful candidate will provide leadership for the Digital Scholarship Centre, driving the adoption of digital media services, advocating for emerging media technologies, and managing the creation of multimedia resources tailored to the needs of AKU faculty, students, and staff. Additionally, they will play an integral role in advancing the university’s core objectives in teaching, learning, and research.
Oversee a comprehensive range of duties encompassing strategic planning, operational execution, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure organizational objectives are met efficiently. Develop and implement policies that enhance productivity, compliance, and workplace culture, while fostering an environment of accountability and continuous improvement. Monitor team performance, address challenges proactively, and optimize resource allocation to drive measurable results. Serve as a liaison between senior leadership and staff, facilitating clear communication and alignment with company vision. Additionally, lead initiatives focused on innovation, talent development, and process optimization to sustain long-term growth and competitiveness.
Oversee the full spectrum of operations for the Digital Scholarship Centre, spearheading initiatives that foster its expansion, innovation, and enduring sustainability.
Spearhead the archiving and preservation initiatives for the scholarly publications and research outputs generated by Aga Khan University, ensuring their long-term accessibility and integrity.
Offer technical assistance for digital research instruments, library technologies, and information systems, such as RFID solutions and the Library Management System.
Facilitate the seamless incorporation and practical utilization of cutting-edge media technologies in educational, instructional, and scholarly initiatives.
Oversee the upkeep and management of the AKU Library’s electronic database systems, guaranteeing their precision, seamless accessibility, and ongoing currency.
Develop visually compelling graphic design, branding, and promotional materials for AKU publications, events, and marketing initiatives to enhance visibility and engagement.
Oversee the ongoing development and management of the institutional digital repository, intranet platforms, and web portals specific to AKU libraries across East Africa.
Create and oversee Lib Guides, digital learning materials, and online courses to enhance academic programs and ensure their continued accessibility and relevance.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in software development or a closely related technical role
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Python, Java, or C++
• Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software design principles
• Experience with distributed systems, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure), and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
• Familiarity with relational and NoSQL databases, as well as caching mechanisms
• Demonstrated ability to design scalable, secure, and high-performance software solutions
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the capacity to troubleshoot complex technical issues
• Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams
• Commitment to writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
A master’s degree in Information Systems or a closely related field, or an equivalent credential in a relevant discipline, is required.
A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Multimedia Technology, or a related discipline is required.
A minimum of five years of professional experience within a high-volume academic environment is required.
Demonstrated expertise in overseeing digital repositories and/or institutional archives, ideally utilizing the Digital Commons platform, is required.
Experienced in crafting online courses and e-learning materials, with strong skills in graphic design and web development tools.
Proficiency in the practical application of Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and online discovery or search platforms is required.
Expertise in cutting-edge technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital transformation initiatives is required.
Proven proficiency in scholarly communication and research support services is essential.
Developed expertise in creating library and subject guides, as well as other resources designed to assist with research inquiries.
Fluency in macOS and Windows operating systems is required.
