Oversee and execute a range of critical responsibilities and core accountabilities as part of this role. Ensure adherence to established standards and protocols while maintaining high levels of accuracy and efficiency in all assigned tasks. Review E&S documentation for new investments and advisory engagements in the Financial Intermediary sector—including Banks, Funds, NBF Is, and Micro Finance Institutions—to identify risks and contribute meaningfully to the selection process.

Financial Intermediaries, oversee E&S considerations for IFC investments across the entire project lifecycle, from initial assessment and appraisal through public disclosure, board evaluation and approval, to commitment, disbursement, and ongoing project supervision.

Prepare and finalize comprehensive project-related documentation, both internal and external, to facilitate IFC investment initiatives.

Lead or participate in the identification and formulation of Environmental & Social (E&S) risk mitigation strategies and value-enhancing solutions, assisting clients in effectively managing their E&S risks.

Offer expert direction to IFC investment teams regarding environmental and social risk management, facilitating informed support throughout the entire investment cycle for effective processing and decision-making.

Assist financial institution clients in enhancing and deploying their Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESSS), while strengthening their operational capabilities.

When overseeing E&S assessments, offer guidance and assistance to team members while optimizing the utilization of staff, consultants, and resources to ensure deliverables are completed punctually and efficiently.

Collaborate with the investment team to develop and implement environmental and social (E&S) provisions within legal agreements.

Vigilantly oversee assigned portfolio clients to ensure adherence to the mutually agreed Environmental and Social (E&S) conditions outlined in the investment agreement.

Thoroughly identify and articulate discrepancies between client performance and IFC E&S requirements, ensuring both the client and IFC management are fully informed.

Provide guidance to industry teams and clients in addressing inquiries from the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAN) and requests from the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG).

As required, collaborate with cross-regional and global teams to develop policy interpretation notes addressing E&S topics, while also enhancing the corporate knowledge base by evaluating and distributing key lessons derived from project experiences.

Craft comprehensive management briefs that address material environmental and social (E&S) issues.

Participate in regional portfolio evaluations and produce periodic reports as part of the review process.

A minimum of five years of hands-on experience in Environmental and Social (E&S) management, monitoring, or due diligence—ideally within financial institutions and with a focus on the Africa region—is required.

Professionals with hands-on experience in providing advisory or operational support to commercial banks, private equity firms, insurance companies, or other financial institutions on integrating environmental and social (E&S) risk management frameworks, as well as meeting Development Financial Institution (DFI) mandates, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Professionals should possess hands-on experience implementing and interpreting IFC’s sustainability framework, with a strong focus on the IFC Performance Standards.

Demonstrated skill in clearly and succinctly articulating intricate environmental and social topics, both verbally and in writing, ensuring accessibility and comprehension for diverse audiences.

Proven capability to collaborate seamlessly with diverse teams spanning multiple disciplines and cultures, facilitating constructive dialogue and strategically aligning perspectives to advance collective objectives.

Proven track record in emerging markets, with a preference for assignments in fragile or conflict-affected environments.

Frequent travel is a requirement, necessitating the ability to accommodate extensive periods away from the primary work location.

Demonstrated capacity to prioritize and execute various responsibilities efficiently while adhering to stringent deadline constraints.

Proven capability to evaluate complex information, devise strategic approaches, and distill varied data sources into actionable environmental and social risk mitigation strategies.

High ethical standards and a keen understanding of interpersonal dynamics are essential, enabling the ability to manage confidential issues with tact and respect, communicate with diplomacy, and maintain composure amidst challenging circumstances.

Adapting effectively to evolving situations, managing and prioritizing tasks efficiently, and ensuring meticulous attention to detail are essential competencies.

Proficiency in collaborating with Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), Development Finance Institutions (Dais), or donor-funded initiatives—particularly in navigating their operational policies, fulfilling reporting obligations, and adhering to project cycles—is highly desirable.

Fluency in English is a fundamental requirement, with proficiency in French considered a valuable asset.
