    Primary Roles and Responsibilities: 

    The Regional Manager, East Africa will: 

    Lead on the scoping, identification and development of forest partnership businesses that align with the programme strategy and results framework. 
    Oversee delivery of grants and technical assistance to project partners, including leading on diagnostics and implementation of recommendations
    Manage the implementation of the programme’s regional strategy, workplan and budget to achieve the regional targets, in collaboration with other programme staff.  
    Demonstrate relevant expertise in developing and communicating a clear strategic vision and overseeing its effective implementation. 
    Support the Regional Director in building relationships across a wide range of stakeholders including civil society organisation, public and private sector. 
    Act as the programme’s primary representative in the region, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania Uganda and Madagascar.  
    Participate in relevant regional events and conferences, raising the profile of the programme in the region. 
    Lead the regional design and development of other key initiatives, including supply-side, demand-side, enabling conditions and those with a focus on smallholder empowerment and GESI.  
    Work with partners and regional / country teams to identify and facilitate key opportunities relevant to the programme, including potential private public partnerships. 
    Provide technical guidance and quality assurance for selected project activities, outputs and deliverables. 
    Provide regular feedback to the Team Leader, Project Director and other PMU-based teams 
    Provide monthly and regular pipeline and strategy updates to the FCDO-SRO. 
    Oversee the preparation and quality of project concepts/proposals for approval by Internal Approval Committees and the Client. 
    Manage a regional team comprised of various workstreams, supporting to ensure effective collaboration and delivery of timely work and high-quality outputs. 
    Ensure team motivation and wellbeing is prioritised, adhering to good staff management practices including staff planning, recruitment, on-boarding, appraisal, and development. 
    Frequent regional and domestic travel may be required, often at short notice and to insecure locations.  
    Any other tasks requested by the Regional Director, East Africa or the central programme team.

    Essential Criteria:

    Entrepreneurial, self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced, results-driven business environment.
    Extensive relevant experience in international forestry, commercial agriculture or commodity trade policy, processes and investments, at a senior management level.  
    Senior level experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams and leading on delivery of high-quality results against tight deadlines.  
    Track record of leading a team, delivering results and contributing to positive impact (i.e., economic, social and environmental) with a passion for achieving business and development outcomes.
    Proven track record in leading programmes or managing large, complex projects involving high-level local and regional stakeholder engagements and PPPs.  
    Prior experience of working with international development agencies, for example FCDO. 
    Demonstrated experience in outreach and partnership building across a range of stakeholders, particularly with private sector in East African countries.  
    Relevant experience in sustainability, markets and supply chains for agricultural or forest commodities such as, coffee, cocoa, timber products, non-timber forest products (NTFPs) etc. 
    Cross-cultural sensitivity, with the ability to build and maintain constructive and collaborative relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders across different socio-cultural contexts; 
    Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with experience working in an open and collaborative manner across a diverse multi-disciplinary team. 
    Track record of managing a high performing team
    A high degree of personal resilience, flexibility and ability to adapt to changing circumstances. 
    Strong personal qualities, including integrity, equality, openness, inclusiveness and collegiality  
    Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. 
    Must have the right to live and work in Kenya without sponsorship/visa support.

    What you’ll do over 18 months

    Strategic Leadership and Management

    Manages and provides strategic leadership to the APRA Implementation Office and manages the Office overall. 
    Represents the APRA Steering Committee vis-a-vis the APRA Steering Committee, APRA member countries, donors and other stakeholders.
    Represent the APRA Implementation Office in meetings and to external partners, including internationally and at senior levels, as determined with the Steering Committee.  
    Leads the development of  the APRA Implementation Office workplan and budget, ensuring they are aligned with the Steering Committee approved overall APRA work plan and strategy. 
    Oversees the disbursement of funds to implementing partners provided for the APRA Implementation Office in accordance with UNOPS financial rules and regulations fiduciary standards, legal and ethical integrity policies, and in accordance with relevant guidelines approved by the Steering Committee.
    Provides leadership to ensure cohesive and effective day-to-day operations of the APRA Implementation Office. 
    Supported by the APRA Implementation Office team, leads the matchmaking processes between needs identified in country planning and existing programming and activities by donors to catalyze provision of demand-driven technical assistance and implementation support in APRA member states.
    Oversees and coordinates the APRA Implementation Office’s cross-alignment with key African regional actors including the African Development Bank, the African Union and other UN and non-UN initiatives, including the NDC Partnership, the Climate Vulnerable Forum and Vulnerable 20 Group and the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII).
    Oversees the execution of the work plan approved by the Steering Committee, in close coordination with IRENA. 
    Oversees the development and maintenance of a monitoring and evaluation system to assess the timeliness, appropriateness and outcomes of the APRA Implementation Office activities. 
    Leads the effective implementation of all the functions of the APRA Implementation Office. 
    Facilitates the consideration between the APRA Implementation Office and the APRA member countries.
    Leads the development and implementation of a resource mobilization strategy, under the guidance of the Steering Committee, to secure long-term, sustainable financing for the APRA Implementation Office and APRA overall. 
    Works with the Steering Committee on resource mobilization to ensure the APRA Implementation Office has the financial resources needed to deliver its work plan, based on an approved resource mobilization plan, mobilizing resources from governmental and philanthropic donors and other sources of funds as appropriate.
    Oversees the preparation and delivery of reports for endorsement, approval or guidance of the Steering Committee, including but not limited to, annual, progress and performance reports, financial reports, etc. 
    Facilitates the commissioning of any evaluations of the performance of the APRA Implementation Office based on the parameters outlined by the Steering Committee and the donors. 
    Represents the APRA Implementation Office and participates in meetings, conferences, expositions, knowledge fora, and training activities as well as sessions of the Steering Committee, as required

    Provides leadership to the APRA Implementation Office professional and administrative personnel to support them in meeting their responsibilities and perform functions efficiently and effectively.

    Partnership Management and Governance

    Ensure quality and integrity of APRA Implementation Office services
    Ensure that the standard operating procedures of the APRA Implementation Office are fit for purpose, facilitating updates as needed by the Steering Committee, and ensure that these procedures are followed. 
    Oversee and direct the APRA Implementation Office to support the Steering Committee meetings, ensuring that they are convened regularly with a clear agenda and high-quality papers, to enable effective decision-making. 
    Direct the APRA Implementation Office team in organising meetings of the Steering Committee, APRA Investment Fora and other relevant high level events, in close coordination with IRENA and APRA member countries. 
    Ensure that the APRA member countries remain engaged in and informed about the work of APRA and are actively involved in delivery and decision-making.

    Impact of Results
    The effective and successful achievement of results by the Director, Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa directly impacts on the development and performance of the Multi-Country Office, the visibility and image of the UNOPS as an effective service provider in project services and management and consequently strengthens its competitive position as a partner of choice in sustainable development and project services in the country served

    Education

    An advanced university degree (Master’s Degree or equivalent) preferably in Development Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Social Sciences, or related areas is required.
    A first level university degree (Bachelor’s Degree) in combination with two (2) additional years of relevant work experience can be accepted in lieu of the Master’s degree (total of 12 years of experience).

    Experience

    A minimum of fifteen (15)  years of progressively responsible professional management experience is required.   
    Out of the 15 years, at least 3 years of professional experience in the following: 
    Building and managing multidisciplinary and multicultural teams is required.
    Building and managing multi-stakeholder partnerships is required.
    Working on energy transition and climate action is required. 
    Working with developing countries is required.
    Professional experience dealing with topics relating to the clean energy transition,  climate change adaptation and mitigation and familiarity with the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement is required.

    Job objective

    Project implementation:

    Oversee the end to end implementation of CTG’s digital systems, with a primary focus on Tayo, across designated countries & operational units.

    Key competencies

    Project management certification & advanced experience in IT project management & agile project management / scrum master / product owner is desired.
    At least 5 years’ experience in project management, ideally within HR systems or technology implementation.
    Prior & relevant experience in Middle East, Africa & / or Asia is desired.
    Must be fluent in English.
    Proven experience in managing HR system implementations or similar technology driven projects.

    A Site Forester specializing in dry land environments is responsible for managing, planning, and supervising forestry projects in arid or semi-arid regions. This role involves developing strategies for sustainable land use, enhancing forest resources, and conserving the fragile ecosystems typical of drylands.

    KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Forest Management
    Develop and implement forest management plans tailored to dryland ecosystems.
    Monitor the growth, health, and productivity of forested areas.
    Identify and address issues such as soil erosion, invasive species, and water scarcity.
    Land Restoration and Conservation
    Lead reforestation and afforestation projects in dryland areas.
    Design strategies for soil stabilization, desertification prevention, and water management.
    Collaborate with environmental agencies to restore degraded land.
    Resource Assessment
    Conduct surveys and assessments to evaluate the condition of dryland forests.
    Utilize GIS mapping tools to analyze land use and plan interventions.
    Collect and interpret data to inform sustainable practices.
    Supervision and Coordination
    Oversee the work of forestry technicians, CFAs and other stakeholders.
    Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
    Coordinate with local communities to promote sustainable land use practices.
    Research and Development
    Study the effects of climate change on dryland ecosystems.
    Experiment with drought-resistant tree species and agroforestry techniques.
    Stay updated on innovations in dryland forestry management.
    Reporting
    Prepare daily, weekly, monthly reports on project progress, resource usage, and environmental impact.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
    Certifications in dryland forestry or desert ecology are an advantage.

    Experience

    Experience in forestry or environmental management, with a focus on dryland areas. Proven expertise in managing reforestation, afforestation, and conservation projects in arid or semi-arid environments.

    Skills

    Knowledge of dryland tree species, soil types, and water management techniques.
    Proficiency in GIS and remote sensing tools.
    Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
    Physical and Technical Requirements
    Ability to work in harsh environmental conditions.
