Senior Research/Program Manager

About the position
We are recruiting multiple Senior Research/Program Managers (‘Senior Managers’) to support ongoing research programs. These full-time positions are preferably based either in Ghana or Kenya and require extensive travel across Africa. The Senior Managers will be responsible for managing research program activities, including, but not limited to:

Program/project management

Coordinate activities across multiple team members and countries
Develop and monitor timelines for completing project milestones
Develop, modify, and successfully manage project budgets
Delegate tasks to and/or supervise other employees and contractors as needed
Oversee execution of contracts/MoUs with partners, sub-grantees, and contractors
Organize and tactfully lead partner meetings and manage partner communication
Lead fieldwork logistics and data collection activities with minimal oversight
Prepare summary presentations to report to funders

Research management

Develop research protocols and data collection tools
Manage the ethical approval process and ensure that ethical principles are respected
Lead training of data collection teams
Develop and administer effective QAQC methods to ensure data quality
Manage and analyze quantitative and qualitative datasets
Lead the preparation of project presentations, reports, briefs, and publications
Participate in the presentation of results at conferences and workshops

The Senior Manager is anticipated to support a variety of research projects, including but not limited to:
WaterTRACS

The Water Testing, Research, and Capacity Strengthening (WaterTRACS) program includes two primary interrelated components: (1) water quality data collection and analysis at the community, household, school and health care facility levels and (2) a fellowship program that provides resources and opportunities to cultivate a pipeline of skilled water professionals (additional details here). For five years (2021-2026), this initiative is committed to leading water quality monitoring and trend analysis at the community, household, and institutional levels in Ethiopia, Ghana, and Uganda. Collaborations with local universities, laboratories, and government stakeholders are central to this effort. The program generates statistically representative data on water quality to rigorously inform strategies to improve water safety.

Water Quality Assurance Fund

Aquaya launched the Water Quality Assurance Fund (‘Assurance Fund’) in 2020, a mechanism that incentivizes professional, urban laboratories to provide testing services to dispersed, rural water systems. In the event that a water system is unable to pay testing fees within one month, the Assurance Fund pays the fees on its behalf. The Assurance Fund thus, “assures” the laboratory that it will not suffer losses due to the non-payments of testing fees. Additionally, to encourage improvements in water safety management, the Assurance Fund program provides capacity building and technical guidance to water operators as well as engagement activities with consumers. Aquaya is currently implementing the Assurance Fund in Ghana and Kenya, and evaluating its impacts on water safety management via randomized, controlled trials. We also have prospects to introduce the Assurance Fund in Uganda and Tanzania in 2024.

Criteria for the position
The following qualifications are necessary for this position:

Demonstrated experience in managing research programs related to water or sanitation.
Master’s degree – preferably in engineering, science, environmental science, or a related field. Ph.D. is preferred.
6+ years of work experience in research and/or project management (or 2+ years in addition to a Ph.D.)
Experience in the management and execution of research staff, research processes, and knowledge-focused initiatives.
Previous international work experience in Africa.
Ability to analyze quantitative data in Excel, R, or Stata.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Fluency in English.
Ability to travel to field sites approximately 25% of the time (this is an estimated average and is subject to fluctuation).

Required

The Biopsychosocial Determinants of Resilient Aging in Kenya (BRAIN-RESILIENCE-KENYA Project), a three-year Wellcome Leap funded project is seeking a Project Manager. PhD Fellow (Quantitative Genetics of Black Soldier Fly ), Flygene Project in Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Study Coordinator – Pro -Act Project

The Project
The University of Nairobi, in collaboration with Aarhus University’s Center for Quantitative Genetics and Genomics (AU-QGG), the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), and Makerere University (MU), has received funding from the DANIDA Fellowship Centre (DFC) for a project on sustainable and efficient insect production for livestock feed through selective breeding (FLYgene). The project aims to improve the quantity and quality of Black Soldier Fly products through selective breeding in Kenya and Uganda. It will generate new knowledge in Black Soldier Fly (BSF) genetics, genomics, and phenomics for designing sustainable breeding programs in Kenya and Uganda. The project will bring together a multi-disciplinary team of entomologists, geneticists, bioinformaticians, electronic and computer engineers, and nutritionists to investigate innovative BSF phenotyping and family identification systems before establishing a breeding program. The project results are expected to lead to job creation opportunities and climate-friendly bio-waste management in a circular bioeconomy and cover several UN Sustainable Development Goals. To successfully implement the assignment, the Project seeks to competitively fill the following position.
The position
Reporting to the Project teams at the University of Nairobi, AU-QGG, ICIPE, JKAUT, and MU, the position entails carrying out quantitative genetics’ tasks in the FLYgene project. The PhD fellowship will focus on genetic parameters estimation for prioritized Black Soldier Fly (BSF) traits with the goal of implementing selective breeding programs in Kenya and Uganda. It also involves recording of phenotypes in founder BSF populations, estimation of genetic parameters, and developing breeding value prediction models.
Location
This is a full-time position based in Nairobi. The PhD position will be primarily based at the University of Nairobi (UoN), Kenya, with a minimum of one year research stay at Aarhus University (AU), Center for Quantitative Genetics and Genomics (AU-QGG), Denmark, with a possibility of double-degree arrangement (AU-UoN) depending on availability of additional funding.
Job specifications

Have an MSc. in Animal Breeding and Genetics or an equivalent degree recognized by the UoN Senate.
Have solid knowledge of quantitative genetics, statistics, and animal breeding.
Have a good publication record, commensurate with their research experience.
Having prior research experience on BSF would be an added advantage.

About the Role

Purpose of Job

The Regional Director for Regional Collaborating Centre is responsible for leading and managing the strategic and operational activities of the centre, which aims to foster collaboration and coordination among regional stakeholders in the field of health and social care. The Regional Director oversees the development and implementation of the centre’s work plan, budget, and performance indicators, as well as the recruitment and supervision of staff. The Regional Director also represents the centre in external meetings and events, and builds and maintains effective partnerships with Member states and relevant regional and national authorities, organizations, and networks.

Main Functions
The Regional Director for the Regional Collaborating Centre (RCC) is responsible for:

Overseeing the implementation of the RCC’s strategic plan,
Managing the RCC’s staff and budget, and fostering partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
Representing the RCC in regional and global forums, and
Ensure alignment with the RCC’s vision and mission.

Clinical degree (e.g., M.D, MPhil, in Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing) AND a Master’s Degree in Public Health or a related discipline.
Twelve (12) years of relevant experience in public health practice, with emphasis on infectious disease epidemiology, monitoring and surveillance, and operational research, with at least seven (7) years at managerial level with wide powers to lead and manage national, regional or global public health programmes and five (5) years of supervisory level.
Extensive experience in leading and managing complex projects across multiple countries and sectors.
Have successfully coordinated the delivery of high-quality technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge sharing to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development
Should have also fostered strong partnerships and collaboration with various stakeholders, including governments, civil society, private sector, and development partners.

Strong leadership and management skills: The Regional Director must be able to provide strong leadership and management to the RCDCs. This includes setting clear goals and objectives, developing and implementing strategies, and managing staff and resources effectively.
Excellent communication skills: The Regional Director must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including AU officials, government officials, partners, and the public. This includes being able to clearly articulate the RCDC’s goals and objectives, as well as the RCDC’s work and achievements.
Technical expertise: The Regional Director must have technical expertise in the areas of the RCDC’s work. This may include areas such as health, education, agriculture, or the environment.
Political savvy: The Regional Director must be able to navigate the political landscape of the AU and its member states. This includes being able to build relationships with key stakeholders and to advocate for the RCC’s work.
International experience: The Regional Director must have international experience. This includes experience working in a cross-cultural environment and experience working with international partners.
In addition to the above skills, the Regional Director must also be a strategic thinker, a problem solver, and a team player. The Regional Director must be able to work independently and as part of a team to achieve the RCC’s goals and objectives.
The Regional Director of Regional Collaborating Centres in Africa CDC is a critical position that requires a wide range of skills and experience, and must be able to provide strong leadership and management, excellent communication skills, technical expertise, political savvy, and international experience.

TENURE OF APPOINTMENT:

The appointment will be made on a regular term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months shall be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

You will typically lead a team of 3 – 5 consultants to help clients achieve new performance highs.
You will lead the day to day execution of a client project while guiding and developing individual team members. You’ll work directly with clients – usually on site – and you’ll take ownership of the overall project and its end products. You will make an important contribution to the analysis, design, and implementation of business performance approaches, developing tailor-made solutions and working closely with clients to ensure positive impact and sustainable results.

QUALIFICATIONS

Post graduate degree with excellent academic record; MBA, MPH, MPP, PhD or relevant advanced professional degree is preferred
8+ years of consulting working experience in international environments, with the stature necessary to interact as thought partner with senior colleagues and clients
Ability to work collaboratively in a team and create an inclusive environment with people at all levels of an organization
Prior experience as a consultant in a professional services firm preferred
Ability to break down and solve problems through quantitative thinking and analysis
Comfort with ambiguous, ever-changing situations
Intellectual curiosity, strategic thinking and strong project management skills
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English, and in local languages as required
