    Overview

    We are looking for a Spatial Data Scientist with strong machine learning analytics experience. The position falls under the Spatial Data Science and Applied Learning Lab (SPACIAL) of CIFOR-ICRAF. If you have a background in GIS, spatial data analysis, including remote sensing (satellite data analysis, drone data processing), this position might be for you. You will need a strong background in working on the development and deployment of machine learning models based on remote sensing data (e.g. satellite data). Spatial data science tasks will include data analysis using R Statistics, Python, Julia, and QGIS. A background in the maintenance and use of SpatioTemporal Asset Catalogs (STACs) would be a bonus. Tasks will include identification of data analytics problems, cleaning, and validation of data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and uniformity, and machine learning tasks. The position will support multiple themes and units within CIFOR-ICRAF on scientific project tasks, particularly around access to and use of spatial data, database development and management, report writing, and scientific publications. The position will also supervise junior data scientists, interns, and students.

    Summary of responsibilities

    Develop and deploy machine learning models using ground truth and remote sensing data to assess various aspects of ecosystem health at scale based on global datasets. This will include working with both optical and radar data and advanced machine learning frameworks, including deep learning models.
    Conduct spatial data (GIS) analysis tasks using R, Python, Julia, and QGIS.
    Contribute to the maintenance of the SPACIAL STAC.
    Contribute to the development of monitoring systems and platforms.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    The Foundation’s Research and Learning Department is seeking to fill a Research Systems Strengthening Consultant role. The assignment is expected to be carried out remotely over a period of 12 months, starting in March 2024. The consultant will work closely with relevant Research Leads, who will supervise the consultant’s work, progress, and deliverables. Regular assessments will be conducted to ensure that the work is progressing as planned, and any necessary adaptations will be agreed upon in a timely manner.
    The purpose of this consultancy assignment is to coordinate and provide technical support to ongoing and upcoming partnerships within the Research and Learning Department.     The consultant will collaborate with the Research and Learning team as well as others across the Foundation and external partners to accomplish some of the tasks outlined below:

    Support the coordination and completion of ongoing research and learning activities.

    Who You Are

    A Ph.D./Master’s/MBA in global development, the social sciences, education, public policy, and /or another related field is an asset.

    Position Overview:

    This position is a short-term role to join IRC’s Airbel team and provide coverage for staff on parental leave. The main focus of the position will be to support the research coordination of a longitudinal, mixed methods study examining the implementation and effectiveness of case management approaches for children who have experienced violence or trauma in humanitarian settings in Nigeria and Colombia. Other projects include mixed methods studies related to child labor and the reintegration of children associated with armed forces and armed groups, qualitative research on child accountability systems, and research support to a large consortium on social norms and access to education for adolescent girls. This Researcher position will also support coordination, strategy, and business development of other areas of violence research. Paramount in this work is deep attention to ethical considerations related to violence against children research.

    Major Responsibilities:

    Work closely with research and program teams at headquarters and in country programs to coordinate child protection and other emergent violence prevention research studies as needed;
    Ensure research adheres to IRC research standards and all violence ethical guidance;
    Design survey tools and protocols, in collaboration with practitioners and academic partners;
    Lead data collection training and support piloting and implementation as needed, including for both qualitative and quantitative data collection efforts;
    Serve as advisor or co-investigator on child protection research studies
    Support data analysis efforts, including taking initiative to start new analyses;
    Coordinate with grants and administrative teams to produce monitoring or donor reports;
    Ensure development of and uptake of a dissemination strategy for specific studies;

    The Senior Data Analyst will integrate data science solutions to the planning, decision-making, and actor influencing of the Centre. The position holder will design, develop, and validate the effectiveness of data science products and create packages that help communicate data-driven insight and value for engagement with partners for inclusive agricultural transformation in key agrifood value chains.     MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Collate, Collect, Study, explore, and evaluate new and existing data sources (from grey literature to primary data) to determine their usefulness and accuracy for inclusion in decision-making and actionable output.
    Design and build predictive data science products, such as visualizations, models, or artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms for subsequent utilization in commercial solutions.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    The post holder will be required to have and to demonstrate evidence of the following qualifications, attributes, and skills:

    PhD degree in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Biometrics, Statistical genetics, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with seven years of relevant professional experience; or
    MSc. degree in the above or related fields with ten years of relevant professional experience in a high-output environment.
    A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, economic analysis, or related areas is required.
    Experience in research, data collection, and analysis of agricultural productivity data will be highly advantageous.

    DESIRABLE SKILLS:

    Data analysis: A strong analytical background and Proficiency in tools like R, STATA, and SPS for data analysis. Knowledge of SAS or Python and visualization tools (e.g. PowerBI, Looker, Tableau) is an added advantage.
    Design thinking skills: Proficiency in design thinking principles, with an ability to understand user needs, ideate creative solutions, and prototype user-centered data products and solutions.
    Statistical and machine learning skills: Strong statistical and machine learning expertise, particularly as it pertains to agricultural data analysis and predictive modeling.
    This should include experience in Regression analysis, Time series analysis, Dynamic modeling, and Bayesian Statistics. Proficiency in current approaches in Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence must be demonstrated.

    Job Purpose:

    The General Manager, Research and Technology Transfer Department shall provide overall leadership, accountability and is responsible for developing, implementing and executing strategies and plans that will guarantee innovative research, product and technology transfer activities at the Institute to develop new products and improve on existing products within the institute. Additionally, the GM Research and Technology Transfer will develop innovative processes to promote product quality and scope in the local and regional pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.

    Requirements:

    A minimum period of twelve (12) years in relevant work experience and at least four (4) years in a management position in the public sector;
    PhD in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical qualifications will provide an added advantage. Publication of at least five scientific papers in a peer reviewed Journal as the first author or 15 papers in co-authored articles;
    Masters’ degree in any of the following disciplines: Life Sciences, biomedical sciences, Pharmaceutical or its equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution;
    Bachelors’ degree in any of the following disciplines: Life Sciences, biomedical sciences, Pharmaceutical or its equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
    Supervision of at least 6 Master students or one PhD student thesis;
    Professional qualification and membership to a professional body where applicable;
    Leadership course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;
    Proficiency in computer applications;
    Demonstrated merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results; and

    Fulfill the requirements of Chapter six (6) of the constitution.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    Oversee the development, evaluation and release of new vaccines, and other products;
    Coordinate technology transfer from partner companies or institutions to the Institute;
    Collaborate with other local, regional and global research institutions and pharmaceutical companies in product development of new products and technologies;
    Coordinate resource mobilization to support research and development, and technology transfer;
    Coordinate mining of appropriate technologies;
    Provide support to the production and quality control departments/units in the aspects of equipment installation, operation qualification, process validation, and testing method validation;
    Submit Institute’s innovations with Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) potential to the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI), and where possible to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO);
    Facilitate preparation and communication of research findings emanating from the Institute R & D activities through policy briefs, technical reports, and publication in peer review journals;
    Monitor biomedical technology trends through regular attendance and presentation to local, regional and global conferences and workshops;
    Coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of intellectual property rights policy;
    Develop research and technology transfer policies, standards and guidelines;
    Oversee implementation of departmental budgets, work plans, procurement plans; and
    Coordinate preparation of departmental technical reports and board papers as required.
