    Role Purpose :
    The Research Assistants will work directly with the supervisors to collect data during different research and evaluation studies and any other data entry job within Kisumu County while called upon. The successful candidates will be retained in our roster database for a period of one-year renewable subject to performance. The engagement will be on need basis.

    Key Areas of Accountability :

    Working with communities where the studies will be implemented to mobilize community members targeted during the interviews using appropriate channels. 
    Conducting both qualitative and quantitative interviews (FGDs, KIIs, In-depth interviews and household assessments) for various studies and assessment. 
    Collating data from all the tools and working with supervisors to ensure that data collected is of high quality 
    Working with (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning) MEAL team to troubleshoot data collection tools 
    Submitting all data through the provided platforms, that include KoBo and CommCare and other survey forms as guided by the supervisor. 
    Support in Office Clerical work at the support departments. 
    Submitting daily field reports on progress to the supervisor during catch up meetings. 
    Reporting any child protection/ safeguarding issue encountered during the assessment/study.

    Qualifications: 

    Possession of a recognized diploma in a relevant field or a Bachelor’s degree (e.g., social sciences, development studies, public health, IT, statistics, biostatistics) or equivalent experience is an added advantage.
    Strong research experience in both qualitative and quantitative research (focus group discussions, in-depth    interviews and key informant interviews) 
    Experience using information communication technology (ICT) with reputable research organizations/NGOs  will be an added advantage 
    Fluency in English and Kiswahili both written and oral. 
    Excellent communication and interpersonal and report writing skills. 
    Applicants must be a resident of either of the following counties: Embu, Kajiado, Kisumu, Nairobi.
    Computer literacy, particularly in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    Knowledge and experience in health systems and community structures is preferable. 
    Local understanding of geographical context and Language will be added advantage.

    Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required:

    Completed CPA part 2 and a business-related degree

    At least 2 years’ experience in an internal audit department of a financial institution preferably the Microfinance sector

    Should be a person of high integrity, bold and decisive, with good interpersonal skills, a team player.

    Key Responsibilities  

    Purpose

    Provide support in the day-to-day operations of experiments and research activities, including preparation of materials, setting trials in the field/screenhouse/greenhouse/laboratory, from seeding, harvesting to seed processing to ensure that research standards of quality assurance are met
    Perform specific procedures related to experiments/research studies (e.g. preparation of hydroponic solutions for screening, setting of field trials, monitor pests and diseases, maintain seed supply of experimental material, taking measurements for growth and yield assessments to quantify effects of abiotic stresses etc. in field and greenhouse trials)
    Compile and review sample collection for processing

    Engagement

    Provide timely support to contract workers in the field/screenhouse/greenhouse/laboratory to ensure smooth operations and efficiency-monitoring.
    Provide support for training of scholars, farmers, extension workers and interns to ensure maximum and effective transfer of knowledge

    Delivery

    Actively contribute to the maintenance and organization of the field/screenhouse/greenhouse/laboratory as required by the institute protocols including maintaining supply inventory, cleanliness, orderliness and safety in the laboratory and other workspaces, preparation of commonly used solutions/materials, inventory and requests for chemicals and other supplies as well as waste disposal
    Maintain stock of seeds of commonly used genotypes and populations, and provide basic data on stored germplasm

    Requirements

    Diploma in the Agriculture with 2 years of relevant work experience
    Basic knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel) or other softwares
    Experience in rice production and practices of plant breeding in rice
    Experience with field data collection, sample processing and archiving
    Understanding of health and safety in the workplace and good working practices
    Good oral and written communication skills
    Good interpersonal skills Ability to ride a motorcycle on the field and have a valid license for this category or be willing to learn it
    Knowledgeable in milling rice samples, grading, post-harvest handling and working in a grain quality lab will be considered an asset
